Don Cheadle Reveals Troubling ‘Armor Wars’ Update — Crucial to Redeeming ‘Secret Invasion’s’ Controversial Twist

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer with over two decades of comic book lore under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension regarding the latest developments on Don Cheadle‘s James Rhodes and the upcoming Armor Wars project. The Skrull twist in Secret Invasion left many fans, including myself, scratching their heads. It was like finding an extra controller in your favorite game when you were expecting a shiny new weapon!

As a devoted Marvel fan, I must admit that I found Don Cheadle’s portrayal of James Rhodes in “Secret Invasion” to be somewhat underwhelming compared to my expectations. Although the series shares its name with a beloved comic storyline, it seems to have missed capturing the charm and mystery that made the source material so engaging for many readers like myself.

In the storyline of Secret Invasion, it’s unveiled that the Rhodey character we’ve encountered in recent Marvel Cinematic Universe productions wasn’t biologically human. The Skrulls possess sophisticated technology, enabling them to put humans into a trance-like state and convincingly impersonate them. They even manage to absorb their memories during this process.

It’s probable that Rhodes was chosen as a target by the Skrulls because of his close ties with the White House and prominent superheroes. When Talos’ daughter saved him, it became clear that Rhodey had actually been replaced by a Skrull, which could potentially trace back to the events in Captain America: Civil War.

The unexpected turn of events in this story was met with a lot of criticism from fans and had varying reactions overall. However, Don Cheadle has recently shared his thoughts on this twist and the entire project, aiming to provide further insights into the matter.

Originally planned as a movie adaptation of the comic book series titled “Armor Wars,” this project was intended to succeed “Secret Invasion,” which debuted last year, and “Ironheart,” scheduled for release in 2025. As far back as 2011, it was confirmed that a War Machine film was under development, with Joe Robert Cole assigned to write the script.

Approximately nine years after the fact, at Disney’s 2020 Investor Day event, it was unveiled that the series “Armor Wars” would be produced for Disney+, with Don Cheadle returning to portray James Rhodes. In the year 2021, Cheadle himself confirmed that filming was scheduled to commence within a few months.

Initially envisioned as a project, it later transformed into a potential movie, but its production timeline and release date still hang in the balance. Lately, whispers have emerged that the future of Armor Wars and Blade could be determined within the next few months. If these rumors are true, both films may be at risk of being shelved.

Recently, Cheadle discussed with TV Line about the latest developments concerning the project known as Armor Wars.

You can find out and let me know.

Cheadle also addressed the project’s shift from a series back to a movie:

Absolutely! The word that stands out to me in that sentence is “switched.” [Laughs] To be honest, I’m not entirely certain about the current state of things. It seems like there are a lot of changes taking place, and only time will tell how everything unfolds.

Additionally, the actor discussed the surprising plot twist that unveiled his character as a Skrull in disguise.

In simpler terms, what you’re saying is that instead of using the word “demand,” which might suggest a more forceful or mandatory request, you used “request.” For example, when you asked, “What do you think about playing this?” You were not insisting that we play it, but rather inviting us to consider it. Furthermore, setting up the necessary conditions for this potential activity was part of your initial request. So, if these conditions are met and the event takes place, then we move forward. However, if the event does not happen as you suggested, then we can discuss how I feel about it afterwards!
