For a long time, fans have wondered if Vecna (formerly Henry) was the real villain of Stranger Things, or if he was just a pawn. The Mind Flayer seemed like a more powerful force, and the show hinted that Vecna might be controlled by it. The Stranger Things play, The First Shadow, strengthened this idea. Now that the series has ended, we have clear answers. Let’s dive into what we discovered about Vecna and the Mind Flayer.

The Mind Flayer Flayed Henry When He Was Eight
The final episode of Stranger Things reveals Vecna/Henry’s most painful childhood memory. Viewers finally see the full scene: when Vecna, as a young boy of around eight, meets a Russian spy in an abandoned mine. The spy tries to shoot him, but the boy defends himself and kills the man. He then curiously opens the spy’s briefcase, discovering a piece of The Abyss containing particles of the Mind Flayer.

The particles enter Vecna/Henry’s wound, essentially stripping away his original self and connecting him to the Hive Mind, which grants him his abilities. This is when the Mind Flayer first speaks to him on Stranger Things, whispering “Find Me.” Immediately afterward, Vecna/Henry unintentionally uses his newfound powers to kill the man – it appears to be an accidental first act under the Mind Flayer’s influence.
That Memory Is Vecna’s Worst One on Stranger Things

Vecna considers being controlled by the Mind Flayer to be the most terrible experience of his life. The memory is so painful that he actively avoids it, only allowing himself to fully relive it when he feels utterly defeated. It seems he originally blocked the memory from his mind entirely. Considering how much Vecna despises and fears recalling this first encounter with the Mind Flayer in the Stranger Things finale, it’s possible the Mind Flayer has always been the one in control. However, there’s more to the story that Stranger Things reveals.
The Mind Flayer Manipulated Henry/Vecna When He Was Young, Reveals the Play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow

The play The First Shadow adds strong evidence to the idea that the Mind Flayer tormented and manipulated a young Henry Creel, driving him to become Vecna. The play shows the Mind Flayer constantly whispering to Henry, encouraging him to use his powers for evil, lying to him about others, and exploiting his weaknesses. Looking at the play alone, it strongly suggests that Vecna/Henry was powerless against the Mind Flayer, which appears to be a separate being. If the play existed on its own, it would seem Vecna is actually being controlled by the Mind Flayer within the Stranger Things universe.
Vecna Confirms That He Is NOT Controlled By the Mind Flayer

Ultimately, Vecna isn’t controlled by the Mind Flayer anymore. Although the Mind Flayer did influence him when he was young as Henry Creel, Vecna has evolved beyond that point. Some believe the early influence still affects his actions, but Vecna himself dismisses this idea, asserting his own free will.
The final episode of Stranger Things reveals that Vecna wasn’t controlled by the Mind Flayer – he actively chose to join forces with it, even though he had the option to fight it. Vecna didn’t want to resist; he desired the power that came with becoming one with the Mind Flayer, and making the Mind Flayer a part of himself.

In Stranger Things, when Will tells Vecna that the Mind Flayer is controlling him, Vecna replies that the Mind Flayer revealed a painful truth: the world and humanity are flawed. He admits he could have fought it, but instead chose to unite with it, stating they both require each other. This exchange makes it clear Vecna and the Mind Flayer aren’t master and puppet; they’ve become a single being, no longer distinct from one another.
Vecna and the Mind Flayer Are One

Ultimately, the Mind Flayer and Vecna are revealed to be the same being, a connection hinted at since the second season of Stranger Things. However, the show clarifies that they weren’t always unified. Once, Vecna and the Mind Flayer were distinct individuals with separate minds. By the end of the series, though, they’ve completely merged. As Vecna puts it, “We are one.”
Is the Mind Flayer Destroyed Now That Vecna Is Dead?

The Mind Flayer is a strange and pervasive entity, constantly spreading its influence. With Vecna’s death in the Stranger Things finale, many are wondering if the Mind Flayer is truly gone. While we can’t say for sure, the evidence suggests yes. We saw the Mind Flayer’s core essentially wither away when Vecna died, indicating it’s also been defeated and won’t return. Given how closely linked Vecna and the Mind Flayer were – practically as one being – destroying Vecna likely means the Mind Flayer is gone for good as well.
It seems some of the Mind Flayer’s particles remained inside Holly Wheeler even after the creature was destroyed. However, there likely weren’t enough of them to cause significant harm without the main hive mind to control them.

So, ultimately, while the Mind Flayer influenced Vecna, it never actually controlled him. Vecna’s story is tragic, but he still remains truly evil, and we think that’s a more satisfying outcome than simply portraying him as a helpless victim.
Stranger Things is now streaming in full on Netflix.
