As a dedicated fan of Naruto, I have always been intrigued by the complex and multifaceted character of Obito Uchiha. His experiences and actions have shaped the course of the story in profound ways, leaving an indelible mark on both Naruto and Sasuke’s lives.
Obito Uchiha significantly impacted Naruto’s storyline as the mastermind behind the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox’s Attack. Though his actions were often malevolent, they ultimately brought the Five Great Shinobi Countries together to form the Allied Shinobi Forces.
During the Third Shinobi World War, it was widely assumed that he had perished, leaving behind his distinctive Sharingan gene bestowed upon teammate Kakashi Hatake as his sole surviving contribution. Yet, an unexpected turn of events saw Madara Uchiha rescue him instead, sparking a series of pivotal occurrences, including the onset of the 4th Shinobi World War. Despite this, there were no deep-seated hatred towards Kakashi from Obito’s side, but several circumstances led him to develop feelings of disdain for the Copy-Ninja.
Near the close of his life, Obito undergoes a shift in feelings, but first, let’s examine the significant occurrences that fueled his animosity toward Kakashi.
Early Life of Obito
In much the same way as Naruto, Obito grew up an orphan harboring the dream that being Hokage would make the villagers recognize his worth. He enrolled in the academy and nurtured a one-sided rivalry with Kakashi, whom he envied for his innate abilities. Moreover, he held deep affection for Rin Nohara, and eventually, they were assigned to the same team under Minato Namikaze.
In the Third Shinobi War, their team’s resilience was put to the test. Obito grew furious when Kakashi opted to complete the mission instead of saving their comrade Rin. However, when Kakashi was on the verge of being struck by a tumbling boulder, Obito selflessly shoved him aside. Despite suffering severe injuries himself, Obito relinquished his Sharingan ability to Kakashi as a token of goodwill.
In his dying moments, Obito realizes that he and Kakashi have begun to form a bond, but he’s unable to confess his feelings for Rin before being saved by White Zetsu, acting on Madara’s command, as Kakashi and Rin are forced to withdraw.
Death of Rin Nohara
During his recovery at Madara’s hideout, Obito receives alarming news that Kakashi and Rin are in grave danger, on the verge of being slain by ninjas from Kirigakure. He hastily makes his way there, arriving just in time to witness a heart-wrenching scene: Kakashi driving his Chidori through Rin’s chest, causing her to lose consciousness instantly. Overwhelmed with emotion, Obito slaughters the remaining Kirigakure ninjas without hesitation and cradles the lifeless body of Rin, disregarding the unconscious Kakashi.
As a seasoned anime fan with years of experience under my belt, I’ve come to appreciate the depth and complexity of characters like Obito Uchiha. The way his villain arc unfolds is both heart-wrenching and intriguing. It all starts when this young man, filled with desperation and longing, pleads with Madara for the impossible – to bring back to life Rin, whom he held deep affection for.
The Fourth Shinobi World War
At the height of the conflict, Tobi takes a direct hit to the face with a Rasengan, breaking his mask. Startled, Kakashi and Guy identify him as their ex-team member, Obito Uchiha. Shocked by this revelation, Kakashi is dismayed to discover that Obito not only survives but also ranks among the world’s most wanted criminals. The two men clash in the Kamui dimension, but their confrontation cannot be avoided.
Afterwards, Obito absorbs the Ten-Tails into himself and launches an attack on everyone. Naruto and Sasuke team up, and with assistance from others, they successfully overpower him. They extract the chakra from his body, leaving him defenselessly lying on the ground. His loss to Naruto makes him realize that he had been living a deceptive life, striving for the endless illusion of Tsukuyomi.
Near the finale, he sacrifices himself again by drawing Kaguya’s deadly attack towards him instead of letting it harm Kakashi. Earlier, to make amends for his past transgressions, he brought everyone he had killed back to life. He cautioned Kakashi that he wouldn’t be there for another rescue before passing away with a contented expression. In the threshold between existence and the afterlife, Rin was there to welcome him.
In a moment of emotion, Obito relents and assists Kakashi once more to prevent any further interference between them. He imparts to Kakashi the use of his Mangekyō Sharingan briefly, enabling him to support Sasuke and Naruto in their victory over Kaguya. With sincere apologies for past transgressions, Obito and Kakashi bid each other farewell, leaving on amicable terms.
Kakashi was deeply affected by Obito’s demise. In the storyline, we frequently find him paying his respects at the Memorial Stone, where Obito’s name is etched. Despite their animosity towards each other, Obito viewed Kakashi as a formidable adversary to surpass rather than an enemy to eliminate.
