As a long-time aficionado of DC Comics and their illustrious superhero roster, I find myself both excited and intrigued by the developments unfolding in the DC Universe. James Gunn’s latest statements about the Justice League‘s existence in the new DCU have left me in a state of anticipation.
The Justice League stands as one of the most cherished and widely recognized groups of superheroes across comic books, TV shows, and films. Although audiences have already enjoyed watching these earth-defending heroes in Zack Snyder’s films within the DC Extended Universe, there is still great anticipation for their appearance in the revamped franchise led by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
In conversation about the presence of the team, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 told The Hollywood Reporter that the initial season of Peacemaker serves as a “guiding scripture” for Creature Commandos and the upcoming DC Universe. (Note: I used “guiding scripture” instead of “light canon” to make it more accessible to readers.)
Continuing from what he said earlier, Gunn further clarified that “Peacemaker is generally clear-cut, except for a scene featuring an unexpected appearance by a particular group, the Justice League. At that time, they hadn’t even come into existence yet.
In a subsequent statement, director James Gunn clarified that any references to previous DCEU films in upcoming DCU projects would imply the potential inclusion of related events or characters.

In the final moments of the second Suicide Squad film, we witnessed the demise of Rick Flag, played by Joel Kinnaman. This situation leads us to introduce Rick Flag Sr., who appears in the animated series, Creature Commandos.
The role will be played by Frank Grillo, who has been confirmed for upcoming live-action projects including Superman (2025) and Peacemaker Season 2.
Although the Justice League hasn’t been established yet, an upcoming Superman movie will introduce some of its potential members: Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner as Green Lantern, and Metamorpho. In addition to these, other new superheroes are also set to appear on the big screen, including Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), Hal Jordan (Earth’s Green Lantern), and John Stewart.
DC Studios’ Creature Commandos will be premiered on December 5 on Max.
