Doctor Who Unleashes Dark Secrets: Is Kate Stewart Turning Ruthless in New UNIT Spinoff?

In the most recent episode of “Doctor Who”, Ruby Sunday takes center stage for a Doctor-absent escapade, titled “Lucky Day”. This adventure delves into Ruby’s life post-TARDIS departure, offering insights into her struggles. The plot pushes all characters to their limits, particularly UNIT leader Kate Stewart, who is forced to make a tough decision that may lead her down a more sinister and merciless path. The choice made in “Lucky Day” sets the stage for the character development we can anticipate from Kate Stewart in the upcoming “Doctor Who” spinoff, “The War Between Land and Sea”.

In this episode, Ruby finds herself emotionally vulnerable due to her experiences within the TARDIS. She’s struggling with the troubling sights she encountered yet yearning for the Doctor’s presence. However, her situation worsens as events unfold. She encounters Conrad, a podcast host who’s fascinated by the Doctor and the TARDIS following his interactions with the Fifteenth Doctor and Belinda in 2007. Over time, Ruby shares her feelings with him and eventually develops romantic feelings towards him.

During a weekend trip, it’s revealed that Conrad harbors malicious intentions and displays inhumane cruelty. Ruby suspects the Shreek, a dangerous creature, is pursuing Conrad and summons UNIT for protection. However, it turns out that Conrad’s companions are disguised as supporters. He’s actually the head of a hate group propagating conspiracy theories, using this incident to turn the public against UNIT. Conrad exposes the identities of UNIT staff and Ruby, leaks sensationalized information claiming that all alien threats are fabricated for financial gain. Kate learns later that Conrad applied for a position at UNIT years ago but wasn’t hired due to his perceived untrustworthiness.

The situation escalates when Conrad invades UNIT headquarters, making threats to harm people if Kate and her team don’t confess their deceit while broadcasting live. He further enrages Kate by labeling her father, the respected Brigadier, a coward. In response, Kate chooses to unleash the Shreek, giving it free rein to pursue Conrad, revealing the truth to the world. The beast comes close to killing him before Ruby intervenes with a stun gun to control it. During this dramatic confrontation, Ruby implores Kate for mercy towards Conrad and the UNIT staff, who appear frightened beyond measure.

In my viewpoint, Kate is mercilessly teasing Conrad, which undeniably fits his current situation. Frankly, it’s quite fitting. She’s showing a rather ominous side of the Doctor, indeed. Even after Ruby rescues him, Conrad dismisses it as mere special effects until the Shreek attacks him, taking a piece of his arm. Remarkably, he manages to survive and lands in prison, but only temporarily – until Mrs. Flood grants him release. This incident significantly boosts UNIT’s reputation, yet there are some who question Kate’s actions. In truth, Colonel Ibrahim voices his concerns, suggesting she may have crossed a line. However, Kate disregards his worries and walks away. It leaves one wondering if a power struggle is brewing on the horizon. Perhaps. Interestingly, no one else publicly criticizes her decision, but their silence doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t share Colonel Ibrahim’s sentiments.

In the upcoming UNIT spinoff, it’s clear that both characters will contribute significantly. It appears that Kate might continue leading the team, but her actions in nearly letting Conrad perish seem to contradict her usual moral compass. Could this be a sign of a more ominous path for Kate in “The War Between Land and Sea“? Quite possible.

Kate may become wary of newcomers joining the UNIT ranks, given her past experiences. She might even exhibit signs of paranoia towards existing members, recalling Jordan’s betrayal. This sinking ship needs all hands on deck to stay afloat, and Kate will go to great lengths to maintain its integrity, even if others disagree. A fractured UNIT facing a looming threat from the seas makes for an enticing premise for a miniseries.

In this fresh series, we’ll explore situations where conflicts arise without the Doctor to intervene. It’s possible that character Kate might take drastic actions, such as killing an adversary (or multiple ones), which goes against her more peaceful nature. The Sea Devils seem to be in a tough spot. Such a choice could severely harm her professional reputation, potentially marking a tragic end to her family’s UNIT legacy.

In the second season of “Doctor Who,” UNIT might reappear, possibly using the finale as a stepping stone for this series. If Kate persists in testing moral boundaries, the new series could follow a similar path to “Torchwood” and offer a grittier perspective on the Whoniverse.
