Doctor Who Isn’t Dead, Says Producer: ‘We’re Not Done Yet’

Jane Tranter, the executive producer of *Doctor Who*, strongly disagrees with former writer Robert Shearman’s claim that the show is “as dead as we’ve ever known it.” She says his statement is simply not true.

Tranter Defends the Franchise’s Future

Tranter shared her thoughts during a Friday interview on BBC Radio Wales, responding to recent statements by former *Doctor Who* writer Robert Shearman. Shearman had said the show felt stuck and lacked a clear path forward.

“That’s really rude, actually. And really untrue,” Tranter replied.

She explained where things stand with the current season of *Doctor Who*, now that it’s being made with Disney+.

The current plan for *Doctor Who* is a collaboration between the BBC and Disney+ to produce 26 episodes. We’ve completed 21 of those episodes so far.

Five Episodes Remain, With More Decisions to Come

Tranter says the last five episodes covered by the agreement are connected to the new spin-off show, *The War Between The Land And The Sea*.

We still have five more episodes planned. After those air, we’ll all work together to decide what happens with *Doctor Who* in the future, she explained.

She admitted the show is currently changing, but emphasized that this is a natural and essential part of keeping any series fresh over a long period.

“The Doctor Will Be Back”

Even though the future is unclear after this agreement ends, Tranter is still optimistic that the team will continue to thrive.

This franchise has been around for sixty years, and we’ve been continuously reviving it for the past twenty years, starting in 2005. After all that time, you’d naturally expect it to evolve – things shouldn’t stay exactly the same forever.

Tranter ended by reassuring fans: “The Doctor will definitely return – we just need to be patient and see when and who will take on the role next.”
