In a surprising turn of events for “Doctor Who” fans, one of the show’s earliest characters has returned after a long absence. Since its revival 20 years ago, we’ve witnessed some fantastic character comebacks, including classic series companions like Sarah Jane Smith and even former Doctors for special occasions. However, the sixth episode of season two presents what might be the most astounding “Doctor Who” character return yet: Susan Foreman, the Doctor’s granddaughter and first traveling companion, who last appeared on screen decades ago.
Wait, Who Is Susan Foreman in Doctor Who?!
For individuals not yet acquainted with the initial phases of the show, the character known as the First Doctor typically journeyed alongside his granddaughter Susan. The series commenced with Susan posing as a student at a school under an alias (Susan), and two inquisitive teachers, Barbara and Ian, trailed her home. Intrigued, they uncovered that she resided within the TARDIS, leading to a sequence of escapades until they reached the 1964 serial titled “The Dalek Invasion of Earth.” This story unfolds in the 22nd century.
Susan encounters a man named David, whom she finds somewhat appealing, which the Doctor (and scriptwriters) perceive as her developing feelings stronger than friendship, leading to her supposedly falling in love. The Doctor then locks her out of the TARDIS and delivers an impassioned yet unpredictable speech, urging her to experience life on her own while he will return one day. However, he never does come back. He departs, leaving Susan with a virtually stranger. In a 20th anniversary special titled “The Five Doctors“, she makes an appearance due to some complex time-travel related circumstances, but there’s no reference to David and her later life remains unclear. It can be assumed that she went back into her own timeline and continued living.
Susan’s Importance to Doctor Who and Big Return in Season Two
Afterward, there have been numerous references to Susan. More recently, the Twelfth Doctor had a photo of Susan on his workstation. The Fifteenth Doctor hinted to Ruby Sunday that he once had a granddaughter but believes she may have passed away, much like other Time Lords. For a brief instant, the Fifteenth thought Susan Triad could be his granddaughter, but that was not the case. Over time, fans have pondered if Susan is still alive and if she might reconnect with the Doctor.
In this installment, the Doctor encounters an elderly Susan in his thoughts for the first time. Coincidentally, during a previous visit to the Vindicator with Belinda, they find themselves at a space-wide singing competition happening far into the future. However, things take a turn when Kid, a Hellion, appears seeking retribution against the Corporation that sponsored the event. This corporation had annihilated his home planet, Hellia, to extract poppies for flavoring. Now, he intends to unleash a Delta wave intended to wipe out every viewer watching this global spectacle.
He almost entirely empties the facility of its massive crowd, including the Doctor, as he starts solidifying in space. In this moment, the Doctor experiences a vision within the TARDIS of an elderly Susan Foreman, who addresses him as grandfather and urges him to return. Crucially, she instructs the Doctor to locate her. It’s an absolute pleasure to witness Carole Ann Ford returning to her role as Susan in Doctor Who, sixty years after her initial appearance.
This revives the Doctor’s spirit, leading him to devise a shrewd strategy to return to the ship. Upon discovering Kid’s plan of genocide, the Doctor counters with his own, utilizing a gadget that transforms objects into hard light and a holographic duplicate of himself to torment Kid. This scene is a stark turn for the Doctor, but it ends when Belinda enters the control room.
(Note: The phrase “hologram version of himself to torture Kid” may be interpreted negatively, so I’ve rephrased it as “a holographic duplicate of himself to deal with Kid.”)
Without a doubt, it’s the team’s combined intelligence that ultimately saves the day in this situation, rather than sheer force. Yet, throughout this harrowing experience, the Doctor continually sees Susan’s face within the TARDIS. In fact, she advises him to cease his harsh treatment of Kid, but he chooses to disregard her counsel. Despite his attempts to dismiss these visions in this episode, it appears to be a prelude to one of the most memorable reunions in Doctor Who lore between our beloved hero and Susan.
Will Susan Return to Doctor Who for an Official Reunion?
Finding out that Susan is indeed alive offers an immense leap forward for the Doctor. He’s spent years thinking he has no living relatives, carrying a sense of guilt for abandoning her. If he were to meet her again, it would reestablish a bond to Gallifrey and his past life for him.
What’s prompting Susan to contact the Doctor now, after such a long gap? And how might this be linked with Mrs. Flood’s secret plans? Stay tuned for revelations on these questions.
