DOCTOR WHO Almost Had a Tenth Doctor and Amy Pond TARDIS Team

David Tennant and Doctor Who are a perfect match, much like peanut butter and jelly. The actor grew up watching the sci-fi series and eventually became one of the most well-loved Doctors in the show’s history. Tennant is best known for playing the Tenth Doctor for multiple seasons and made a memorable return in the show’s 50th Anniversary special. He surprised fans again by appearing as the Fourteenth Doctor in the 60th Anniversary specials. Though it might seem like we’ve seen a lot of Tennant as Doctor Who, Steven Moffat actually wished the Tenth Doctor had stayed on the show longer and traveled with Amy Pond in the TARDIS.

This information surfaced some time ago, back in 2013, as the show was getting ready to mark 50 years of time and space adventures. (Thanks Comicbook.com for pointing it out!) A few years earlier, Moffat took over from Russell T Davies to become Doctor Who’s showrunner. He introduced us to Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy Pond, a truly memorable duo. Moffat actually approached David Tennant about staying for one more season, imagining him as a special companion to Amy Pond and his trusty blue box. However, Tennant was understandably ready to move on. But what if the Tenth Doctor and Amy Pond *had* met? Here’s what Moffat shared about that possibility.

“If David had continued for one more year, that would definitely have been his final appearance,” Moffat explained. “I envisioned the story beginning with the TARDIS crashing into Amelia’s garden, and a very damaged Tenth Doctor [would stagger] out. Amelia discovers him, gives him fish custard… and generally takes care of him. However, the viewers would be able to see that he’s in extremely poor health – possibly dying. He eventually goes back to his TARDIS and flies away… When he reappears – many years later, from Amy’s perspective – he seems completely recovered and doesn’t recall any of those incidents. Naturally, as the story unfolds, we understand that what we witnessed was the Tenth Doctor nearing the end of his life, about to regenerate – events we [would] revisit in episode 13.”

That’s certainly thought-provoking. However, everything generally unfolds as it’s meant to, and we ended up with Matt Smith’s wonderful Doctor as the Time Lord. There’s a chance David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor might reappear, especially since he’s currently on Earth with his own TARDIS. But that would likely be far in the future… if there even is a future for Doctor Who. At the moment, we’re still hoping to hear news about season three being renewed.
