Stephen Strange’s move to Asgard is turning out to be more challenging than expected. The ex-Supreme Sorcerer of Earth isn’t merely adapting to a new world; he’s dealing with a tangle of divine politics, monetary struggles (even gods have landlords), and hidden perils. A peek into this developing storyline is offered in the ‘Doctor Strange of Asgard‘ #2 Preview.
Living among the divine isn’t just about feasts and grandeur; for Strange, it involves learning Asgardian magic, juggling work to cover expenses, and dealing with enigmatic assassins who seek to end his life. To top it all off, even Thor starts to harbor suspicions towards him. It appears that Strange’s quest for atonement or a fresh start has only plunged him further into complications.
The glimpse suggests a major dispute centered around Loki, seemingly responsible for slaying the sorceress Hulda. Strange, arriving post-incident, chose to conceal Hulda’s body temporarily due to potential political repercussions in Asgard and the risk of magical alarms when teleporting her away. Now, Strange finds himself trapped in a situation where he must hide Loki’s murder, a crime that would likely infuriate Thor if unveiled.
In a turn of events that leaves me breathless, I find myself drawn into an intense standoff when Strange confronts Loki. The previews hint at Loki asserting he was under some form of control or manipulation when he took Hulda’s life, uttering a haunting plea, “I took her life, yet I didn’t, can you see it?” Strange, unmoved by these words, resorts to using the formidable restraints – the Chains of Krakan and the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak – to keep Loki in check. Under the influence of a magic that compels truth, Loki confesses to the deed but maintains there’s much more to unravel behind this act.
In simpler terms, Strange comprehends he requires additional strength to solve this puzzle. He confides in Clea that his strategy is to acquire as much power as possible, and that can only be achieved through Asgardian magic. He’s convinced that learning this new type of magic is crucial in understanding why Loki actually killed Hulda.
Based on the sneak peek of ‘Doctor Strange of Asgard’ #2, it appears that Strange chooses to chase after this newfound power, abandoning Clea on Earth. This decision is driven by his belief that with Doom as Sorcerer Supreme, Earth requires close observation.
In the upcoming issue penned by Derek Landy, featuring artwork by Carlos Magno, colors by Espen Grundetjern, and lettering by VC’s Cory Petit, we can expect an enticing blend of magical detective work and divine conflicts. We’re excited to witness Doctor Strange navigating the complex power struggles in Asgard and Loki’s dangerous schemes. Keep an eye out for its release on April 9, 2025.
