Pierce Brosnan recently told GQ that while he doesn’t actively seek out superhero roles in the Marvel or DC universes, he’d be willing to reprise his role as Doctor Fate in future Black Adam projects if asked.
I’ve been hearing rumors about what they might do with Doctor Fate – a movie, a TV series, or even a cameo in Superman: Man of Tomorrow. And honestly, I’m thrilled! Brosnan himself said he really connected with the character’s deeper meaning and is totally interested in playing him again, which is amazing news for fans like me.
Pierce Brosnan clarified that he hasn’t actively campaigned for a role in a Marvel movie, stating, ‘I’ve never banged down anyone’s door.’ He explained that while he’s aware of potential projects for his character, Dr. Fate – including a possible solo show, a role in the next Superman film, and that he greatly enjoyed playing the character and would be interested in revisiting the role if offered.

Doctor Fate Was Part of the Old DCEU
Pierce Brosnan portrayed Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson) in the DC Extended Universe film Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson. The movie featured the Justice Society and established Doctor Fate as a remarkably powerful hero within that cinematic universe.
The previous iteration of the DC Universe concluded as James Gunn started creating a new universe with the DCU’s planned projects.

What a Return Could Mean for the DCU
As a fan, I’ve been thinking about Doctor Fate and whether we might see him in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow. If he does show up, it’s almost certainly going to be a version of the character from another universe – a Multiverse variant, basically. And that would be huge, because it would mean Gunn is willing to bring things over from the old DC Universe, which hasn’t happened with any of the projects announced so far. It would be a nice connection to what came before!
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following James Gunn’s reboot closely. He’s brought back favorites like John Cena as Peacemaker, but it’s felt like a fresh beginning. However, if the rumors are true about Pierce Brosnan reprising his role as Doctor Fate, that would be a really exciting first step in connecting the old and new DC universes – a proper crossover I’ve been waiting for!
It’s also possible James Gunn is quietly casting Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate for the DC Universe, without making a formal announcement. Gunn mentioned that Doctor Fate appears in a mural within the movie Superman, and Brosnan’s recent comments could be referencing that background appearance.

Dwayne Johnson Says He Has Moved On
It’s notable that this news comes shortly after Dwayne Johnson announced he’s stepping away from his role with DC and the Black Adam character, and has publicly expressed his support for the new direction James Gunn is taking with the DC Universe.
Now that Johnson is no longer involved, it’s simpler to tell a story with Brosnan returning as a version of himself from across the multiverse.
The Status of Doctor Fate’s Future
There’s no official confirmation yet, but Pierce Brosnan has expressed interest in the role and is open to it. If James Gunn is looking to introduce magic and the supernatural to the DC Universe early on, Doctor Fate would be a simple and effective way to do so within the new storyline.
