Disney+ Unveils Four New Channels, Including ‘Hits and Heroes’ for Marvel and Star Wars Action

As a seasoned gamer and avid streamer with a soft spot for all things Disney, I can’t help but feel a tad concerned about the recent financial struggles of Disney+. With my fingers crossed, I hope that these new channels will breathe some fresh life into the platform and keep me entertained for many hours to come.

Disney Plus was planned as Disney’s main streaming platform, created to rival Netflix and attract a substantial portion of the streaming market by offering a vast collection of previous productions and exclusive content.

It seems that recent findings suggest the company might be struggling financially, as Disney+ is said to be on track for a staggering $11.4 billion in operational losses.

Although Disney+ boasts a substantial number of subscribers and high viewership, the amount it spends hasn’t seemed proportionate. With other streaming platforms growing their content offerings and moviegoers returning to theaters, Disney+ has seen a considerable decline in earnings.

In an effort to recoup some of its investments, Disney+ is devising various tactics, such as introducing “playlists” or “channels.” By the end of this year, four new channels are scheduled to debut: Hallowstream (offering seasonal content), Hits and Heroes (action tales from Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars), Throwbacks (content evoking pop-culture nostalgia), and Real Life (documentaries and biopics). The purpose of these additions is to stimulate user interaction on the platform. At present, Disney+ holds a viewership share comparable to Tubi, but lower than Netflix and Amazon.

From July 2023 to July 2024, the combined share of television viewership for Disney+ and Hulu decreased from 5.6% to 4.8%. On the other hand, streaming platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, Peacock, and Tubi experienced growth during this time frame.

These newly introduced channels cater to particular programs or topics, enabling viewers to stream on-demand new episodes or synchronize with the channel at their convenience. At present, these functionalities are exclusive to ad-free Disney+ Premium subscribers, and Disney refers to them as “playlists” instead of live channels.

On Disney+, we consistently strive to offer our subscribers an optimal value and enjoyable experience each time they log in. This is achieved through our diverse playlists that cater to various preferences, including news, children’s content, popular genres, acclaimed TV series, and blockbuster movies. These playlists are tailored according to seasonality and individual interests, ensuring a relaxing streaming experience for everyone.
