Disney has become the first studio in 2025 to earn over $6 billion at the global box office. So far this year, they’ve made $2.3 billion from tickets sold in the U.S.—the most of any major studio—and $3.65 billion internationally.
The movie industry reached this important mark sooner than predicted, largely due to the success of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has already brought in over $450 million worldwide. Warner Bros. is the next highest-grossing studio this year, with a global box office total of $4.3 billion, as reported by Deadline.
Disney has now surpassed $6 billion in box office revenue for the fifth time, following previous achievements in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. They reached this milestone in 2025 with 16 film releases, boosted by two major blockbusters: Zootopia 2, which earned $1.3 billion, and Lilo & Stitch, which grossed over $1.038 billion.
Marvel Studios had a strong year with three releases – The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World – earning over $1.3 billion worldwide. Other successful films included Predator: Badlands, which became the top-grossing movie in its series with almost $184 million, and Freakier Friday, which brought in $153.1 million. Although Tron: Ares ($142.2 million) and Pixar’s Elio ($154.2 million) didn’t perform as well as hoped, they still contributed to Disney’s overall earnings.
Avatar: Fire and Ash remains incredibly popular, bringing in $50.8 million globally in just one day, including $16.5 million in North America. So far, the film has earned $119 million domestically and $331.1 million internationally, with China contributing $67 million to the overseas total.
The film had the second-highest global opening weekend of any Disney movie this year, behind Zootopia 2 ($560.3 million). It also marks the second-biggest worldwide opening for a sequel directed by James Cameron, following Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022.
Disney had a very successful 2025, proving that people still love going to the movies. The studio earned a lot of money from popular franchises and established a new standard for the film industry.
