Disney and Marvel Studios have announced that The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 37th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and will kick off Phase Six.
This is the second attempt to restart the franchise after previous versions didn’t resonate with viewers. Instead of telling the story of how the heroes got their powers, Marvel started this version right in the middle of the action, showing the team already working as established heroes.
This project has been in development for years. After Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019, Marvel got the rights back to the Fantastic Four and started planning a new movie. Jon Watts was originally going to direct, but he left, and Matt Shakman took over in 2022.
The script was revised multiple times, and Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer all helped shape the final result.
Together. As a family.

Production on the film started in 2024 at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional shooting taking place in various locations across England and Spain. It had its first showing in Los Angeles on July 21st, and opened in U.S. cinemas on July 25th. Critics generally liked the movie, and it became the most financially successful Fantastic Four film to date. Marvel Studios has already begun working on a follow-up.
