Disney has shared how much it cost to make *Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker*, and the final amount is surprisingly high.
I was blown away when I read that the final cost for that incredible space movie from 2019 was $593.7 million! Apparently, it’s the third most expensive film *ever* made, which really puts its scale into perspective.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, *The Rise of Skywalker* concludes the nine-film Skywalker saga and wraps up the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The story follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they fight to defeat Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and the First Order, who are now supported by the unexpectedly returned Emperor Palpatine.
I’m so excited about this movie – the cast is incredible! You’ve got Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and all the new stars like Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac. It’s packed with talent!
The film premiered in Hollywood on December 16, 2019, and opened in U.S. theaters on December 20.
Despite earning over $1.077 billion globally – making it one of the year’s biggest hits – this film was the lowest-performing of the three sequels in terms of box office revenue. Reviews from critics were mixed, but the film received several award nominations, including three each from the Academy Awards and the British Academy Film Awards. It also won five Saturn Awards, with the award for Best Science Fiction Film among them.
I was shocked to learn the final cost of making this movie! We initially heard it was around $416 million, but it turns out that wasn’t the whole story. When you add in things like promoting the film, extra filming, and all the work that goes into finishing it after shooting, the total went way up. It’s a huge investment, but I’m still excited to see if it pays off!
This incredible number proves just how financially successful the Star Wars franchise has become, and shows both the potential gains and significant challenges of creating such large-scale blockbuster series.
