Disney+ may be struggling with viewership again, as early numbers indicate the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians isn’t attracting as many viewers as its popular first season.
Interestingly, Disney hasn’t shared any viewership numbers for Season 2, unlike Season 1, when they heavily promoted the show and highlighted its initial success.

Season 2 Suffers Massive Sophomore Slump
New data from Luminate paints a very different picture for Season 2.
As a huge fan, I was checking the numbers for Season 2, and honestly, I’m a little surprised. It’s only racked up about 483 million minutes of streaming in the US after three weeks. Compare that to Season 1, which had a massive 1.3 billion minutes viewed in the same amount of time – it’s a pretty big difference!
That translates to roughly 11.2 million estimated views for Season 2 versus 31.5 million for Season 1.
It’s a decline of 63%.

Disney Silent As Engagement Drops
Unlike Season 1, Disney has not released any official viewership numbers for Season 2.
It’s striking how quiet things are, considering how much attention Percy Jackson previously generated to boost the platform, especially with people getting tired of Marvel and Star Wars content.
We’ll have a clearer picture once Nielsen releases its official data, because Disney+ automatically enables Nielsen tracking for all users.

Why the drop?
The recent drop in viewership for Season 2 of Percy Jackson might be due to several factors: the long wait between seasons, original young viewers getting older, and the show’s inability to attract a wider audience beyond fans of the books. The decline in viewers is happening faster than usual, even though the season premiered in December.
The decline is also due to problems with Disney+, where fewer people are watching original shows. Viewers, especially teens and adults interested in Marvel and Star Wars content, are watching less, and Disney is now trying to boost viewership by combining Disney+ and Hulu.

Season 3 Is Still Happening
Even though viewership numbers dropped, Disney has already decided to make a third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, before the second season has even been released.
The next season will adapt The Titan’s Curse, the third book in Rick Riordan’s series.
If things continue to decline, the adaptation’s success in the long run will likely hinge on overcoming its initial drop in popularity.
