Disney+ Password Sharing Crackdown Intensifies, New Paid ‘Extra Member’ Options

As a long-time subscriber to Disney+, I must say, I feel like a kid whose favorite toy has been taken away and then given back with a hefty price tag attached. The streaming service’s latest move to crack down on password sharing feels more like an arbitrary rule change than a genuine effort to protect its content. It seems they’ve decided who and how a subscription can be used, and it’s left us feeling a little bit like Wolverine in that Deadpool meme – angry and clawing at the screen!

It seemed as if streaming services had momentarily calmed down from their antics, except for the regular price hikes and such. But lo and behold, they’re back to surprise you! The newest development is a tightening of Disney+’s policy on password sharing. Mimicking Netflix’s approach, Disney+ plans to offer paid options for individuals outside your household to access your account as part of their broader crackdown on password sharing. In other words, Netflix was the pioneer with its “extra member” model during their experimentation with curbing password sharing, and now Disney+ is following suit. Frankly, it seems that streaming services are unilaterally deciding who can use a subscription and altering the rules without much warning. And honestly, we’re not thrilled about it.

Either way here are the details of Disney+’s new horizon of password-sharing crackdown.

Disney+ Defines Households so it Can Stop Your Password Sharing

Disney+ encourages you to utilize your account and password in a way that reflects your household, meaning devices connected at your main home address where the family members living there can enjoy the content. In other words, they’re saying, “Your Disney+ subscription is designed for use within your household.

Even when you’re not at home, you can still enjoy Disney+ content. Here’s what you need to do: Inform the app that you’re away or have moved your household. You will then receive a one-time passcode sent to the email associated with your Disney+ account. With this code, you can access and watch your content.

No need to fret, you can indeed share Disney+ from a distance; just remember that doing so might require some payment.

Disney+ Lets You Add a Paid ‘Extra Member’

Disney+ outlines the details of its approach to limiting password sharing: “As for individuals not part of your household, they’ll need to create their own account and subscribe individually. Alternatively, they can be added as an Extra Member to your account, incurring an additional monthly fee.

Through the “Additional User” feature, account holders have the opportunity to pay an extra fee to incorporate another individual into their plan. For instance, in the U.S., an Additional User profile will cost an additional $6.99 monthly for Disney+ Basic subscriptions and $9.99 per month for Disney+ Premium subscriptions. Keep in mind that each account can only have one Additional User slot. This option is more affordable compared to creating a new account altogether.

But Is There Any Other Way to Share Your Password and Account According to Disney+?

Negative! If you don’t opt to include another person as a additional user, they would need to create their own individual Disney+ account instead. It seems so obvious now, doesn’t it?

In Addition to Password Sharing Crackdown Intensification Disney+ Will Also Raise Prices

Apart from tightening password sharing policies, Disney+ is also planning to increment its subscription prices starting in October. The ad-supported version of Disney+ will now be priced at $7.99 per month, while the ad-free variant will cost $15.99. For more information about these price adjustments, you can visit this link.
