As a long-time skeptic of trading card games, I’ve always found the hobby to be intimidating and complex, with rules that seemed impenetrable to newcomers like me. But my perspective changed completely after discovering Disney Lorcana TCG Gateway by Ravensburger.
As someone who used to scoff at trading card games, dismissing them as needlessly complex and unwelcoming communities, I must admit I was wrong. That was until I discovered Ravensburger’s Disney Lorcana TCG Gateway.
As a seasoned tabletop gamer with years of experience under my belt, I have to say that the Disney Lorcana Gateway stands out from other collectible card games I’ve played for several reasons. When you open the box, you’ll find the standard components like a game board, two starting decks, four reward packs, damage counters, and instructions. But what sets it apart is its progressive experience.
As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: The game gives me two starting decks – one with Amber and Amethyst cards, the other with Ruby and Sapphire. The guidebooks make things simpler by representing these colors as yellow, purple, red, and blue. Each starter deck consists of only 30 cards, significantly fewer than the usual 60-card decks.
Each pack enriches the game experience by introducing fresh card types and capabilities. You’ll encounter new items, tunes, the assist function, character transformations, and much more. Unfortunately, location cards are not part of the game package. The gradual advancement encourages you to pause and familiarize yourself with your cards. Despite having played Lorcana for approximately a year, I welcomed the use of checklists as an invigorating hurdle. They prevented me from relying on my customary tactics. For instance, I often forget to employ characters instead of ink to sing songs. However, being compelled to utilize characters to perform songs in order to advance to the next gate left me with no alternative but to experiment.
For newcomers to the Disney Lorcana Game, this gateway provides an enjoyable experience. Yet, more experienced players can still have fun and derive satisfaction. An added advantage for veterans is the sturdy game board which could potentially replace the use of a play mat.
The Disney Lorcana TCG Gateway pack can currently be purchased at Target for $24.99. Starting from August 9, this pack will also be sold at other large retailers and local gaming stores.
