It seems those with wealth and influence often prioritize funding others like themselves, hoping to increase their own fortunes and control. This is especially noticeable in Hollywood, where billionaires are now competing to dominate the industry, often at the expense of what audiences want. We’re seeing major studio owners battle for control, and even significant investments – like a billion dollars from one of the biggest studios into OpenAI – aimed at creating short-form content featuring popular characters. It’s a system where financial gain seems to be prioritized over creative content and audience engagement.
Last month, we mentioned Disney might partner with OpenAI’s Sora. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger has indeed made a deal – a significant one, costing around a billion dollars. This three-year agreement will let Sora users create videos featuring beloved characters from Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. This move suggests major studios are choosing to adopt AI technology for their content, despite strong opposition from the artists and creators who actually produce it.
Disney initially suggested letting Disney+ subscribers create short videos using its characters, but it now seems like CEO Bob Iger was really testing how to profit from AI-generated content. This follows Disney and Universal’s recent lawsuit against Midjourney, an OpenAI competitor, where they accused the company of widespread plagiarism. It appears Disney only considers content plagiarism if they aren’t financially benefiting from it. This new feature is expected to launch on Disney+ early next year.
At TopMob, we believe that generative AI—whether used for entertainment or harmful activities—takes away the crucial human touch from creative work. In fields like filmmaking, art, music, and especially journalism, it weakens and corrupts the source of originality and authentic expression.
