Disney Hits Pause on the Live-Action TANGLED Remake

It appears the production of Disney‘s live-action version of Tangled has encountered some trouble. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney may have temporarily halted its progress, which could extend indefinitely. Given the recent disappointing performance of Disney’s last live-action adaptation of an animated classic, Snow White, this development might not come as a surprise. Snow White was met with both commercial and critical backlash after months of controversy, stemming largely from the film’s expensive 270 million dollar production budget. The Tangled remake was slated to be directed by Michael Gracey, who worked on The Greatest Showman, with a script penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. There were whispers that Kathryn Hahn, known for her role in Agatha All Along, might take on the part of Mother Gothel.

Over the past 15 years or so, Disney has made a fortune by remaking classic animated films into live-action movies. Hits like “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” and “The Jungle Book” all earned over a billion dollars. Even those that didn’t quite reach that level, such as “The Little Mermaid” and “Cinderella,” were still highly profitable. However, people seem to tire of certain ideas, and this might be one of them. We predict that “Hercules” could be the next film to flop. But rest assured, Disney will likely bring these remakes back in the future because they’ve consistently proven to be more successful than not.

2010 marked Disney’s resurgence into animated fairy tales with the release of “Tangled.” After concentrating on diverse storylines for some time, this film’s success paved the way for “Frozen” later on. However, Hollywood studios are known for their reactive nature, and the flop of “Snow White” undoubtedly has them hesitant at the moment. Similarly, Disney, the same studio that halted all “Star Wars Story” films following the underperformance of “Solo,” may eventually bring Rapunzel and Flynn Rider to life on the big screen. It’s only a matter of time, whether we’re ready for it or not, but it could take a while longer.
