Disney Finally Casting A Rapunzel Who Looks Like Rapunzel

Disney appears to be course-correcting after Snow White.

Following the disappointing performance of the film Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, and the negative reaction to its casting choices, Disney appears to be subtly changing its approach.

The studio is auditioning actresses for its live-action Tangled movie who look similar to Rapunzel as she appeared in the original 2010 animated film, rather than creating a completely new look for the character.

Actresses Testing For Rapunzel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney recently conducted screen tests and chemistry reads with actors auditioning for the roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in London.

Actresses said to have tested for Rapunzel include:

  • Freya Skye (Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires)
  • Sarah Catherine Hook (The White Lotus)
  • Teagan Croft (Titans)
  • Olivia-Mai Barrett (Invasion)

The role is perfect for someone who can play a classic Rapunzel with long blonde hair, which is what fans have been hoping for. Lola Tung, known from The Summer I Turned Pretty, was considered, but wasn’t available for testing due to potential conflicts with her schedule.

Flynn Rider And Mother Gothel

Disney auditioned Milo Manheim (from the Zombies movies), Charlie Gillespie (Julie and the Phantoms, Splitsville), and Scottish actor Gilli Jones to play Flynn Rider. They were all looking for someone who could capture the same charismatic, roguish personality as the character in the original animated film.

Okay, so it looks like the search is on again for someone to play Mother Gothel! Scarlett Johansson was originally going to do it, but she’s had to pull out because she’s already committed to a couple of big projects – a new Exorcist movie and The Batman Part II. That leaves Disney needing to find another actress who can really shine as the villain.

Tangled Heads Toward Production

Michael Gracey, known for directing The Greatest Showman and Better Man, will be directing a live-action version of Tangled. The movie will maintain the large musical numbers that made the original so popular.

Disney is planning to start filming in the UK in June, but they need to finalize casting for Rapunzel, Flynn, and Gothel first.

Following the disappointing response to the Snow White adaptation, Tangled appears to be a conscious shift in direction – a live-action version featuring actors who more closely resemble the beloved animated characters fans know and love.
