Disney Drops Woke ‘Diversity’ and ‘DEI’ From Annual Report: First Time In Years

Okay, so Disney just filed its annual business report, and I noticed something interesting. They’ve quietly dropped the terms “diversity,” “inclusion,” and “DEI” from the document – it’s the first time they’ve done that since 2019! This came to light after their latest quarterly meeting, and it’s a pretty noticeable shift in how they’re presenting themselves to investors. It seems they’re moving away from explicitly highlighting those initiatives in their official filings, at least for now.

Last year’s Disney report dedicated a section to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), detailing plans to support creatives from underrepresented groups and highlighting over 100 employee-led groups. This year’s report doesn’t include any of that information. The word “equity” now appears only when discussing financial matters.

DEI Programs Quietly Removed

Earlier this year, Disney quietly removed mentions of its “Reimagine Tomorrow” and “The Disney Look” programs from official documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Reimagine Tomorrow program faced criticism after a company leader openly talked about intentionally including LGBTQ+ themes in animated content.

Shareholders Still Support Equality Index

Even though Disney moved some of its legal filings, its shareholders still voted in March to keep participating in the Human Rights Campaign’s corporate equality index, and Disney received a perfect score of 100 this year.

“Belonging” Replaces “Diversity”

Last month, Disney hosted its first “Global Belonging Week,” according to Business Insider. The company emphasized “belonging” and “inclusion” during the event, and notably avoided using the term “diversity.” This suggests Disney is changing how it communicates about its workplace culture.

What This Means

Disney has noticeably changed how it communicates with the public by removing language related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This shift comes after political and cultural changes, particularly with the rise of the Trump administration and growing opposition to company-led DEI initiatives.

In the past year, Disney has been gradually reducing its public emphasis on diversity initiatives. They’ve removed specific references to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs from official documents and are now using more general terms like “belonging” instead.

This change shows the company is trying to improve its image, lessen political criticism, and attract more customers, especially after facing public disapproval and a drop in its stock value in recent years.

Disney continues to track things like the Human Rights Campaign’s equality score, but it’s clearly moving away from using the term ‘DEI’ and the strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion that characterized its brand for a while.
