Disney+ Developing Riverdale Zombie Show AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE

Having built an entire TV world based on DC Comics characters for the CW with the Arrowverse, and successfully reimagining the Archie Comics characters on television with Riverdale, Greg Berlanti is revisiting that universe once more. As reported by Deadline, Disney+ is in development on Afterlife with Archie, a one-hour drama series inspired by the popular Archie comic book series created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla. The show is set in a Riverdale where Archie, Jughead, and their friends face a zombie outbreak. The same team of producers also brought us the successful Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

It’s unusual, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the show’s creator, also wrote the original comic book series the show is based on. Only ten issues of the comic were ever released, meaning the show will likely expand significantly on the source material. Riverdale was a hit for the CW, lasting for seven seasons. Initially, the show was a fairly typical, updated take on the classic Archie characters. However, it became increasingly strange as it progressed, though it notably avoided using zombies. Even though Riverdale concluded in 2023, Afterlife with Archie will almost certainly feature a new cast playing Archie and his friends.

This is the first comic book adaptation Disney+ is creating that isn’t based on a comic they already own, unlike their Marvel shows. It’s also a bit surprising that Warner Bros. Television is developing this for Disney+ and not HBO Max. The character Sabrina Spellman also appeared in the Afterlife with Archie comics. This means we might see a fresh take on the famous teenage witch. About ten years ago, there was a whole series of horror comics based on Archie characters, including Vamperonica, which, as you can imagine, featured Veronica as a vampire. Perhaps we’ll see that storyline explored in Afterlife with Archie too. We’ll just have to wait and see if Afterlife with Archie eventually comes to Disney+.
