As a lifestyle expert with a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say that the upcoming live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch has me absolutely stitch-tic! Having grown up watching this heartwarming tale set against the enchanting backdrop of Hawaii, it’s truly a dream come true to see this beloved classic getting a fresh update.

At the D23 expo held on August 9 in Anaheim, California, Disney revealed a sneak peek of their upcoming live-action remake of the 2002 hit animated film Lilo & Stitch. Excitingly, they shared the first image of the cherished character Stitch on Instagram and announced its release date, which will be in theaters during summer 2025 with the caption, “Experiment 626 has joined the conversation! The live-action version of Lilo & Stitch is coming your way exclusively in cinemas in Summer 2025!”

Twenty-two years have passed since Lilo & Stitch, an adored animated film, first graced theater screens. Now, fans can look forward to a fresh take – a live-action/CGI version. Originally, the story followed the lives of 6-year-old Lilo and her older sister Nani in Hawaii, who welcomed a blue, alien dog-like pet named Stitch into their home. In the forthcoming live-action remake, Stitch will return to our screens thanks to CGI technology, as reported by Variety.

Moreover, this project is helmed by Director Dean Fleischer Camp and penned by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright. In this upcoming film, Maia Kealoha takes on the role of Lilo Pelekai, a character previously voiced by Daveigh Chase. Interestingly, Chris Sanders reprises his voice role as Stitch.

As reported by Variety, Zach Galifianakis joins the cast and takes on the role of Dr. Jumba Jookiba, the eccentric scientist who brings Stitch to life. Billy Magnussen steps into the shoes of Agent Pleakley, Courtney B. Vance portrays Lilo’s social worker, Tia Carrere reprises her animated character Nani as Mrs. Kekoa, Amy Hill is cast as Tūtū, and Jason Scott Lee will play the part of the luau manager.

During an earlier conversation with People magazine, Maia Kealoha, the young actress set to portray Lilo Pelekai, opened up about the moment she discovered she’d be embodying this character.

Kealoha exclaimed, “When I learned I would be playing Lilo, my jaw fell open in disbelief! I couldn’t contain my excitement.” She went on to share that she immediately phoned her father about the news, and then they both leaped for joy, overwhelmed with happiness.

Currently, you can stream the 2002 animated sci-fi comedy-drama “Lilo & Stitch” on Amazon Prime Video.
