Disney Confirms Leadership Change With New CEO Replacing Bob Iger

Disney has chosen Josh D’Amaro as its new CEO. The company’s board of directors voted unanimously to approve the decision. D’Amaro, who currently runs Disney Experiences, will officially become CEO on March 18th, during Disney’s annual meeting, taking over from Bob Iger.

Josh D’Amaro has worked at Disney for 28 years, steadily advancing to become responsible for all of the company’s theme parks, cruise lines, and merchandise. Last year, this part of the business generated an impressive $36 billion in revenue. Disney’s Board Chairman, James Gorman, welcomed the decision, saying D’Amaro is a uniquely inspiring and innovative leader who is perfect to lead the company forward.

This change means Bob Iger is finishing his second term as CEO, a role he returned to in 2022 to help steady the company. Iger is fully confident in his replacement, saying D’Amaro deeply understands the Disney brand and has the talent to achieve the company’s biggest objectives. Iger will leave the CEO position in March, but he’ll continue as an advisor until his full retirement at the end of the year.

Dana Walden is the new President and Chief Creative Officer. She’s currently a Co-Chairman at Disney Entertainment and will now lead the creative vision for all of Disney’s content, including movies, TV shows, streaming services, and news. She will report directly to D’Amaro and will focus on maintaining the high quality of Disney’s storytelling across all platforms.

D’Amaro expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for his new position, saying he’s deeply honored to lead a company he cares about so much. He’s already played a key role in major recent Disney expansions, like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and World of Frozen. Guests are excited to see what he does next, with upcoming projects including lands themed to Disney Villains and Monsters, Inc.

Beyond the recent change in leadership, Disney had a successful year with popular movies like Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash. They’ve also gained attention through a large $1.5 billion deal with Epic Games, bringing Disney characters to Fortnite. On TV, Walden has been responsible for critically acclaimed shows such as The Bear and Only Murders in the Building, which are attracting and keeping subscribers on Disney+ and Hulu.

The new leaders at Disney have a busy future ahead, with major movie releases planned, including Toy Story 5 and a live-action Moana starring Dwayne Johnson. They’re also working on a new theme park in Abu Dhabi and continuing to invest in artificial intelligence through their partnership with OpenAI. Under the direction of D’Amaro and Walden, Disney seems well-positioned to navigate the evolving media world while still delivering the beloved experiences fans expect.
