Disney Announces Sequel For a Hit Movie in 2028 – Release Date Set

Disney has announced that a second Lilo & Stitch movie is in development! Disney’s CEO, Josh D’Amaro, revealed the news to shareholders, with the film set to premiere in theaters on May 26, 2028, during Memorial Day weekend. Shortly after, Pixar will release Incredibles 3 on June 16, 2028.

Last Memorial Day weekend, the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch performed exceptionally well, bringing in $182 million in just four days. This broke the previous holiday opening record, exceeding the numbers for the 2023 film Top Gun: Maverick. Ultimately, the movie earned a total of $423.7 million domestically and $614.2 million worldwide, making it one of only a handful of films last year to reach $1 billion in total earnings.

Even before the first film was released, the director, Fleischer Camp, and the producer, Eirich, stated they were concentrating on finishing that movie and hadn’t started thinking about a follow-up.

Fleischer Camp said future movies will depend on how audiences react, but the world they’ve created has lots of potential for more stories. Eirich also pointed out some hidden details and characters from previous films, like Angel, Reuben, and 627 – though he accidentally called 627 by the name Leroy.

Fleischer Camp stated in June 2025 that any continuation of the story would need a compelling narrative, not just be driven by what audiences wanted. He also suggested he’d be willing to consider an animated spin-off, potentially as a full series or a shorter, limited release. Then, on June 26th – a date fans celebrate as “626 Day” or “Stitch Day” – Disney officially announced that a sequel was in the works.

Chris Sanders, the original voice of Stitch, is back as a writer for a new project in the franchise. This is the first time he’s been involved with the series beyond voicing the character. Producer Eirich is also returning to work on the sequel.

Fans of the original movie are really excited about this new sequel, hoping it will recapture the fun, emotional story, and exciting sci-fi action they loved before. With the same actors and filmmakers involved, Disney seems to be trying to recreate the magic of the first film.
