Disney+ is getting a major update! As Hulu expands internationally, Disney+ will become a single place to access content from all three streaming services: Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. Here’s a rundown of the changes.
Last week, Disney announced that Hulu will become its main source for general entertainment worldwide, replacing Star, starting October 8th. This means a completely new and combined app experience. Over the next few months, Disney+ will be updating its app to make it easier to use with simpler menus and a better design. You can also expect more recommendations tailored to your interests and a more visually appealing home screen.
Here’s What Users Can Expect
The updated design will have a completely new navigation bar on the main page. This includes a “For You” section that uses a smarter system to suggest content you might like, based on what you’ve watched before. You’ll also find separate tabs for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN, making it easier to browse each service. Importantly, you’ll only see tabs for the services you already subscribe to.
We’re adding a new “Live” section to the side menu, making it easy to find and watch live content and streams anytime.
We’re making user profiles more central to the app experience. Within your profile, you’ll find recommendations tailored to your tastes, based on what you’ve watched before. This is powered by a smarter recommendation system from Disney that will continuously learn and get better at suggesting titles you’ll love.
Other Changes Include:
- New badging tags like “Season Finale,” “New Series,” and “New Movie” for content
- Cinematic-style poster artwork for titles
- Dynamic brand row showcasing the latest titles from each brand
- Widgets on iOS that take users to content directly
Over the next year, we’ll be releasing updates to make the app more modern and work seamlessly across all devices. Though many of the improvements will first be seen on tvOS, the mobile app will also be getting enhancements. Disney hasn’t shared specific details just yet.
