Disney and Marvel Want OUT of Justin Baldoni’s Feud With Blake Lively; Cite Upcoming Marvel Storyline In Request for Lawsuit Dismissal

Disney and Marvel are pushing back against attempts to draw them into a notable legal disagreement between actor-director Justin Baldoni and actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. In correspondence addressed to Judge Lewis J. Liman, Marvel’s attorneys contend that any requests for information related to the evolution of the Deadpool character ‘Nicepool’ should be temporarily halted.

Disney’s legal team at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp states that the subpoena is aimed at material that involves Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) plotlines, which are considered private and confidential due to their ongoing development.

According to a statement made by Marvel on April 25, as reported by Deadline, the documents being requested are exceptionally private as they concern the creation of a character within an ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series. Marvel emphasized that revealing such confidential information could potentially harm future MCU projects.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my concern over the ongoing court case regarding the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine movie. The character named ‘Nicepool,’ seemingly a caricature of Justin Baldoni, is at the heart of this dispute. According to Baldoni, his legal team, studio executives, and PR personnel, this character is not just an innocent creation; it’s a defamatory and mocking representation that was conceived with ill-intent or ‘malice.’

In a letter dated April 28th, Baldoni’s legal team from Meister Seelif & Fein and Liner Freedman Taitelman + Cooley stated that Marvel would not suffer harm if the court refused to delay enforcement of the subpoena. This is because the film has already been released, and any confidential documents can be marked as such under the protective order.

Additionally, they contend that Ryan Reynolds’ effort to discard the case is not relevant to the current discovery process, as he himself has not requested or been granted a delay in the discovery phase related to his dismissal request.

The disagreement in court originated when Blake Lively accused Baldoni and his business of sexual harassment and retaliation, which allegedly occurred during their collaboration on It Ends With Us. Baldoni asserted that Reynolds stood by his wife through the legal aftermath and even contributed to tarnishing his public image.

Baldoni’s team contends that Reynolds functioned as a ‘representative’ for Lively and has been drawn into a USD 400 million defamation and extortion case. They maintain that if accusations against Reynolds are dropped, the data requested in the Subpoenas continues to be pertinent regarding the lawsuit against Lively.

The trial will commence on March 9th, 2026. Judge Liman previously described the case as an ongoing dispute between public relations firms. There are several motions and subpoena disagreements, one of which involves Marvel’s internal documents, known as Nicepool-related documents. A decision on these documents is yet to be made. However, it is anticipated that the court will make a ruling regarding this matter prior to the next Deadpool movie’s release in theaters.
