Disney Addresses Beau DeMayo’s Discrimination Accusations: “We severed ties with him immediately”

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer who’s followed the X-Men series since its inception, I must say, this whole DeMayo saga has left me utterly baffled and disheartened. On one hand, I admire DeMayo for his passion for the X-Men universe and his dedication to creating a faithful revival of the ’97 animated series. On the other hand, it’s troubling to see such talented individuals being embroiled in controversy, especially when the details are as murky as this case.

1997’s “X-Men” series turned out to be an unexpected success for Marvel Studios, primarily due to Beau DeMayo’s exceptional scriptwriting skills, which were rooted in his extensive understanding of the original animated show and its underlying comics.

The unexpected dismissal of DeMayo by the studio caused quite a stir among fans as it happened only weeks before the debut of the first season. The writer and studio were mostly tight-lipped about the situation, leading fans to ponder possible reasons. Rumors from reliable sources hinted that DeMayo’s termination could be linked to his challenging work ethic and the adult content on his OnlyFans platform.

Over the past few weeks, DeMayo has been publicly criticizing his previous workplace, alleging unfair treatment based on discrimination. He disclosed that despite “X-Men ’97” being nominated for an Emmy Award, he was not included in the ceremony. Additionally, DeMayo stated that credits for his writing in season 2 were unexpectedly withdrawn, which he believes may have been due to a series of LGBT-themed illustrations related to the show that he had shared.

1st off, I’m incredibly thankful for being part of #XMen97, working alongside some truly gifted individuals. Bringing this revival to life was a long-held dream, and the fan response has been heartwarming. Yet, as I moved on from the project, it felt necessary for me to share my thoughts…

Firstly, I’m so grateful to have worked on #XMen97, collaborating with some amazingly talented folks. Creating this revival was a dream come true and the support fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt it pressing for me to speak up in the wake of leaving the show…

It appears that DeMayo is implying that Disney may have suppressed him due to his personal orientation, as he suspects the omission of his credit in season 2 could be related. Yet, Disney has countered with an alternative and concerning viewpoint regarding the incident.

“In March 2024, Mr. DeMayo’s employment at Marvel ended promptly after a thorough internal review uncovered serious issues. Since then, he has no longer been associated with our company.”

Following DeMayo’s exit from Marvel, a deal was struck regarding his tweets related to the series. Nevertheless, violations of this agreement resulted in his name being omitted from season two credits. Although the specific details behind his dismissal are still vague, rumors suggest that allegations of sexual misconduct could be at play.

It’s more probable that DeMayo’s crediting was revoked due to underlying problems discovered during an internal probe, as opposed to simply his online behavior. He hasn’t made any comments about this issue so far.
