Among the most eagerly awaited movies of 2025, without a doubt, is Sinners. Even before any specifics about this film were revealed, it had garnered significant backing due solely to its talented creative team. Filmmaker Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan have formed quite the power duo, comparable to Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro, with four blockbuster hits already under their belts. Sinners will be their fifth collaboration since 2013’s Fruitvale Station, and this time they delve into the horror genre for the first time. The movie centers around twin brothers, both portrayed by Jordan, who revisit a town in the Jim Crow era South to uncover a sinister presence lurking within their hometown.
Before releasing the initial full trailer, TopMob was invited to a private screening event. During this event, director Ryan Coogler shared some intriguing insights on the motivations, central ideas, and personal significance of the movie “Sinners”, revealing some unexpected sources of inspiration.
The Films and Books That Inspired Ryan Coogler’s Sinners
As I sat down with director Ryan Coogler for an exclusive interview, one of the first questions posed by the charming Juju Green, also known as Straw Hat Goofy, was about the inspirations behind his latest masterpiece, “Sinners.” At first glance, it appears to embody the eerie ambiance of a Southern gothic tale, reminiscent of “Eve’s Bayou,” but upon delving deeper, Coogler revealed a diverse array of films and literature that influenced this captivating production. He shared:
…”This film takes inspiration from numerous genres and can be considered quite versatile. It carries a strong influence from the Coen Brothers, starting notably with ‘Inside Llewelyn Davis’, followed by hints of ‘Fargo’. Robert Rodriguez’s style is also evident, particularly reminiscent of ‘From Dusk till Dawn’. However, it bears a closer resemblance to ‘The Faculty’, a remake of ‘The Thing’, which happens to be one of my favorite horror films. In fact, ‘The Faculty’ is my top pick among horror movies.
Ryan mentions that while “Sinners” shares similarities with other Carpenter films, it doesn’t delve deeply into these connections. However, he does disclose the sources of the film’s inspiration, which are books by Stephen King, particularly “Salem’s Lot.” Similar to this book, “Sinners” will focus on its community and a sinister presence that resides within it.
Sinners: The Research, Themes, and Music
Ryan Coogler deliberately chose Louisiana as the setting for “Sinners” because his maternal grandfather is from Mississippi and his Uncle James, who he lost while working on “Creed,” was also from there. Growing up, Coogler listened to blues music with Uncle James and heard stories about his Mississippi experiences. With “Sinners,” Coogler had the opportunity to delve deeper into his family history and put a dark, sinister spin on blues music, which was sometimes called the “Devil’s music.” The trailer for “Sinners” suggests that the film will focus on a place reminiscent of a juke joint, where blues music and dancing dominate.

SINNERS Trailer Delivers Vampire Horror, But Ryan Coogler Says There’s More Supernatural Elements
In assembling his creative team for the new project, Coogler reunited with some familiar faces, such as cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and costume designer Ruth E. Carter (the Black Panther movie series). For composing the music of Sinners, Ryan collaborated once more with Ludwig Göransson, who provided the scores for the first two Creed movies as well as the Black Panther films. Coogler is full of praise for Göransson’s exceptional musical talent, particularly his ability to play multiple instruments, especially the guitar.
This movie explores the realm of American music, specifically blues music. If you’re familiar with the lore of musicians like Tommy Johnson, Robert Johnson, it’s all woven into the narrative. Moreover, when considering the vampire as a universal entity, it carries a connection and an opposite figure in nearly every culture. It is the supernatural being most linked to temptation and choice. This association is notably strong in blues music. Additionally, there was a stark divide between the worldly lifestyle and religious institutions, which you can understand, right?
In the creation of the film “Sinners,” director Coogler was granted ample space and creative freedom to explore supernatural aspects such as vampires, but not just these elements alone. A significant portion of the storyline and its earthbound components were meticulously researched in collaboration with a team of consultants, delving into topics ranging from Hoodoo to the Mississippi Blues Trail. Coogler himself undertook location scouting, even making a trip to the iconic Club Ebony in Indianola, Mississippi, where B.B. King often graced the stage.
According to Coogler, this movie was thoroughly investigated. We put a lot of effort into ensuring that the only fantastical elements in the film are supernatural ones. Therefore, we aimed for the world portrayed to feel incredibly tangible, just as we have with our previous works…
Currently, the film titled “Sinners” is nearing completion and preparing for its premiere on April 18, 2025. Soon, you’ll have the chance to tango with the Devil on the big screen.
