Nowadays, it’s great to witness an increasing number of individuals in vibrant costumes portraying superheroes that finally receive the recognition they deserve. In earlier times, black superheroes and heroes of color were also around, but they often went unnoticed and didn’t receive the attention they deserved. This article highlights 30 remarkable black superheroes from both Marvel and DC, whom I consider some of the greatest heroes out there.
30. Bumblebee (DC)
Previously known as an ordinary scientist, Karen Beecher had a romantic relationship with Mal Duncan, also known as the Herald of the Teen Titans. To make her boyfriend shine among his teammates, she created a bumblebee-themed superhero costume and orchestrated a fake villain attack on the Teen Titans. She successfully eluded capture without revealing her true identity. In due course, she confessed to the Teen Titans about her actions.
Instead of feeling anger, the Titans were awestruck by her abilities and chose to ask her team to join them. She and her partner consented to this offer and became part of the Titans West squad in San Francisco. Later, when the Titans disbanded for a while, she took up employment at S.T.A.R. Labs, where she developed non-deadly weaponry. However, she reconnected with the Titans once they decided to revive their team.
29. Lunella Lafayette/Moon Girl (Marvel)

A nine-year-old prodigy, known as the cleverest character within the Marvel Universe, shares adventures with Devil Dinosaur in their comic book series. Prior to her heroic exploits, she was a gifted child who suffered bullying at school because of her frequent daydreams. The bullies gave her the nickname “Moon Girl” due to her unique abilities.
In the end, Devil Dinosaur journeyed to New York City in pursuit of the Nightstone, a treasure he shared with Moon Boy. Regrettably, this precious stone had been seized by Lunella. She realized that it was actually a Kree Omni-Wave Projector. Eventually, Lunella encountered Devil Dinosaur and their alliance began in New York City.
28. Cyborg (DC)

Growing up, I was fond of a character from Teen Titans who frequently appeared on Cartoon Network. However, his backstory and comic book persona are significantly darker than what the TV series portrayed. Known as Victor Stone, he was born to scientists who regularly utilized him for their experiments. As he matured, he developed feelings of resentment towards them due to their treatment, despite possessing a high IQ as a result. After encountering Ron Evers, he entered a rebellious phase; however, he has yet to veer towards a life of criminality.
At his family’s research facility, an accident took his mother’s life and left Victor gravely wounded. Over time, his father modified Victor extensively, turning him into the well-known Cyborg. Life wasn’t simple for Cyborg. Because of these enhancements, he faced rejection from society. However, Cyborg found solace when he became part of the Teen Titans, a group where he could connect with others who, like himself, were considered outsiders or freaks.
27. Mercedes “Misty” Knight (Marvel)

Previously serving as an officer in the New York Police Department (NYPD), Misty was exceptionally committed to her role, ultimately sacrificing her right arm while attempting to disarm a bomb on duty. Subsequently, she was introduced to Tony Stark who fitted her with a prosthetic arm, enabling her to carry on her acts of valor. Post this, she chose to depart from the NYPD and established Nightwing Restorations, Ltd., a private investigation firm, in partnership with Colleen Wing.
26. Vixen (DC)

Mari McCabe was destined to become the first African female DC superheroine, but unfortunately, her comic series was discontinued. As a child, she listened to tales about Tantu’s Talisman, an artifact believed to unlock the extraordinary abilities of the animal world. However, before passing the Talisman to Mari, her parents were murdered by her uncle.
Later on, Mari made her way to the United States where she carved out a successful modeling career in New York City. Eventually, she journeyed back to Africa to acquire the Totem, transforming into the renowned superhero known as Vixen.
25. John Stewart (DC)

It’s no wonder that a Black Green Lantern exists; after all, John Stewart hails from Detroit and has a background as an architect and Veteran US Marine. The Guardians chose him as a backup for Hal Jordan, and he would often step into the role of Green Lantern when Hal had other commitments, even joining forces with members of the Justice League. Over time, he became the primary Green Lantern once Hal decided to retire from active duty.
24. Static Shock (DC)

Initially introduced in Milestone Comics, the character known as Static later moved to DC Comics when their original publication ceased. Since then, he’s been a member of the Teen Titans team. In a gang conflict, Virgil Ovid Hawkins was exposed to an unusual chemical substance, which gave him a variety of electromagnetic powers. Realizing this transformation, he opted to don a costume and combat crime, much like Spider-Man, maintaining his superhero persona a secret, even from his family.
The character Static Shock gained significant popularity, becoming known as a family-friendly superhero show titled Static Shock. Numerous other DC heroes appeared in the series to help Static in his crime-fighting adventures. Previous iterations of him can also be found in shows such as Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice.
23. Patriot (Marvel)

Known as Eli Bradley, this individual hails from a lineage of heroes. Notably, Eli’s grandfather, Isaiah Bradley, was one of the 300 African-American soldiers who were experimented upon to create a new Super Soldier. However, Eli did not receive any powers because his mother was fathered by Isaiah before he was given the serum. Since Eli lacked superhuman abilities, he resorted to using Mutant Growth Hormone pills to give himself powers.
22. Miles Morales (Marvel)

An alternative Spider-Man character is Miles Morales, a mixed-race teenager who gets bitten by a genetically enhanced spider, granting him spider-themed superhuman abilities reminiscent of the neighborhood’s beloved hero, Spider-Man. Unlike Peter Parker, Miles initially decides to keep his powers hidden and continue living as an ordinary teen rather than emulating the superhero persona.
Months following an incident where Miles suffered a bite, his family encountered an attack by Osborn. Fortunately, Spider-Man saved his family, but tragically he lost his life in the process. Arriving too late, Miles felt deep regret and sorrow for not being able to aid Peter Parker, despite possessing the power to do so. Overwhelmed with emotion, Miles decided to step up as the new Spider-Man, honoring Peter’s legacy.
21. Blade (Marvel)

As a cinephile, I’d like to share some intriguing details about a fascinating character named Eric Cross Brooks. Born under unique circumstances, he is not just any ordinary individual – he’s a Dhampir, half-human, half-vampire. During his mother’s labor, a vampire named Deacon Frost took the opportunity to feed on her, unknowingly bestowing upon the unborn Eric certain vampire enzymes. These enzymes didn’t transform him into a full-fledged vampire, but they did imbue him with extraordinary traits that set him apart. Alas, his mother paid the ultimate price for this twist of fate, leaving young Eric in the care of the inhabitants at Madam Vanity’s brothel.
Eventually, Eric transformed into a Vampire Hunter following his encounter with an experienced mentor who chose to tutor him. Later on, he adopted the alias ‘Blade’ for his vampire-hunting alter ego.
20. Storm (Marvel)

Born into a tumultuous childhood, where her parents frequently relocated, Storm was often dragged along. Tragically, her parents were victims of the Arab-Israel conflict, leaving her an orphan. This traumatic event also led to her developing claustrophobia. As she matured, she honed her skills in petty theft and pickpocketing. It was during one such attempt that she crossed paths with Professor X, who offered her a place among the X-Men, a unique team of individuals who possess mutant powers.
In my perspective as a movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by how she masterfully wields her weather-controlling prowess within the X-Men saga. Her leadership qualities are no jest; she steps up to lead the team whenever the situation demands it.
19. Black Lightning (DC)

Jeff Pierce, hailing from the economically struggling part of Metropolis, infamously known as Suicide Slum, is portrayed as a teacher endowed with electric-type superpowers through a belt he dons, initially used to combat local crime. However, his narrative has undergone several revisions over time, as subsequent accounts suggest that he naturally possessed the ability to generate electricity for his fight against injustice.
18. Bishop (Marvel)

In one of the Marvel Universe’s possible timelines, Bishop is a character who hails from a future where the X-Men have ceased to exist. His grandmother shared countless tales about them until her passing. A mission took him back to their time when the X-Men were still in existence. He subsequently joined forces with them to thwart Fitzroy. Over time, he chose to remain in the past and ultimately became a permanent member of the X-Men.
17. Batwing (DC)

One of Batman’s numerous allies who assists him in combating crime globally is David Zavimbe, who goes by the name Batwing and serves as the representative for Batman Incorporated in Tinasha city. Orphaned at a young age, David and his brother Isaac were conscripted into General Keita’s army, also known as the Army of the Dawn. Among many child soldiers, they stood out as prodigies.
At a certain stage, David successfully takes Keita’s life and flees the camp, embarking on a fresh chapter in his existence. Eventually, he lands a job as a police officer in Tinasha, utilizing his abilities to uphold law and order. Concurrently, Bruce Wayne unveiled the Batman Incorporated initiative across America. His ambition was to create Batman-esque heroes globally. Shortly after the announcement, David is recruited as part of Bruce’s newly formed team.
16. Blue Marvel (Marvel)

In essence, Adam was a valuable member of the U.S. military with extensive knowledge in science. He found himself spearheading an innovative project aimed at utilizing Ant-Matter. Regrettably, during the course of their work on a reactor, both Adam and his colleague Conner Sims were trapped in an unforeseen blast. While Conner’s physical form disintegrated into energy and vanished from existence, Adam somehow managed to survive and discovered a way to stabilize antimatter, which endowed him with extraordinary powers.
In this universe, racism played a significant role, which necessitated special precautions for Adam’s superhero identity. Therefore, he donned a blue helmet and a suit designed to conceal his skin tone, allowing him to combat crime effectively while maintaining anonymity.
15. Cloak (Marvel)

Growing up as a timid teenager from a financially struggling neighborhood in South Boston, Tyrone Johnson struggled with a persistent stuttering issue. One day, Tyrone and his long-time companion, Billy, observed a clerk being shot at a nearby store. As the robbers escaped, Billy panicked and chose to run away, fearing false accusations. Seeing this, the police nearby instructed Billy to halt. Meanwhile, Tyrone attempted to persuade the officers not to fire, but his disability made it difficult for him to effectively communicate. Unfortunately, Billy sustained fatal injuries after being struck by the police.
Overwhelmed with fear and remorse following his friend’s demise, Tyrone decided to escape to New York City. Upon arrival in Manhattan, he contemplated robbing Tandy Bowen, but she fell victim to another robbery before he could act. Instead, Tyrone intervened and retrieved her purse, leading them to forge a bond. Ever since then, they’ve been inseparable. One day, when offered refuge by mysterious men, the duo found themselves kidnapped for testing on a specific drug instead.
The duo successfully endured the ordeal of drugs and escaped together with another convict. As fugitives, Tyrone was enveloped by an odd darkness and felt an unusual hunger. Yet, his new shape remained comfortable as long as Tandy was in proximity. Conversely, Tandy started emanating a radiant light. In time, Tyrone discovered he could swallow up the thugs chasing them in his dark realm, while Tandy could slash them with blades. Subsequently, they adopted the aliases Cloak and Dagger, becoming vigilantes fighting against the scourge of drug trafficking.
14. Synch (Marvel)

Initially, Everett Thomas didn’t receive significant focus or backstory. He is a mutant possessing an unusual aura that enables him to harmonize with other super-powered individuals in proximity. By harmonizing, he can momentarily acquire any power or ability from his subject.
13. Aqualad (DC)

In a twist of events, the second individual to assume the name Aqualad was Jackson Hyde. It seems that Jackson possesses unique tattoos that become visible upon contact with water, which he’s been secretive about, even from those closest to him, like his girlfriend. However, an entity urges Aquaman to locate Jackson before another group learns of his abilities. As events unfold, Jackson uncovers the truth about his powers and origins. His father reveals that Mera had given Jackson to him, and he shares information about an Atlantean chest that must be opened once Jackson manifests his own powers.
Yet, prior to unveiling the chest, they were ambushed by Siren and her team of enforcers. Just when all hope seemed lost, Aquaman arrived in the clutch, successfully escorting them to safety. This marked the beginning of Jackson’s transformation into a novice superhero.
12. Ultimate Nick Fury (Marvel)

In contrast to the Nick Fury you know from the Marvel movies, who might or might not have been administered the Super Soldier serum, his comic book counterpart was indeed part of the Super Soldier Program. However, unlike Captain America, the serum granted Ultimate Nick Fury enhanced strength and agility beyond normal levels, but not to the extreme capabilities exhibited by other Super Soldiers. Additionally, the serum helped slow down his aging process.
In the Ultimate variant of Fury, he serves as the commander of S.H.I.E.L.D. and leads the Ultimates, a revamped team similar to the Avengers.
11. Cecilia Reyes (Marvel)

Hailing from Puerto Rico and born in the Bronx, New York City, Cecilia Reyes is a mutant who experienced tragedy at a young age when she lost her father. This event fueled her desire to become a doctor, with the aim of saving lives. Upon achieving this goal, she found herself endowed with mutant abilities but declined an invitation from Professor X to join the X-Men, opting instead to continue practicing medicine in her current hospital.
Three years on, it appears that she was unable to escape employing her talents. A series of events continued to unfold around her and the hospital where she worked, ultimately leading the board to dismiss her for safety reasons. With no other options available, Cecilia sought out the X-Men and wound up becoming a member.
10. Luke Cage (Marvel)

In his own comic series titled “Luke Cage: Hero for Hire,” Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, was the central character. Prior to acquiring his powers, Luke was wrongfully incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, he underwent an experimental treatment that bestowed him with extraordinary abilities. Upon release, he took on the role of a hero-for-hire. Over time, Luke became a member of the New Avengers and later led a reformed group of former supervillains, known as the Thunderbolts.
9. Shuri (Marvel)

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my anticipation should the Marvel Cinematic Universe one day cast Shuri as the Black Panther. If that scenario doesn’t unfold, however, we can still immerse ourselves in the vibrant world of comics where Shuri holds the title of Princess of Wakanda and is T’Challa’s sister. From a young age, Shuri harbored ambitions to assume the mantle of the Black Panther. Alas, her journey for the title was thwarted when her brother triumphed over their uncle in the bid for the title before she could even reach the arena.
8. Orpheus (DC)

It wasn’t initially in Gavin King’s plan to be a hero. Instead, his aspirations lay in professional dance and singing. Regrettably, these dreams led him to face bullying from his peers on multiple instances. Consequently, King took up martial arts to protect himself effectively. As he advanced into his teenage years, he eventually achieved his dream of becoming a pro dancer, embarking on worldwide tours as he had always envisioned.
As he traveled, his horizons broadened, revealing the struggles of people facing famine, poverty, and assorted hardships. This sparked a desire within him to be their champion. Subsequently, he was discovered by an organization that equipped him with unique training and advanced technology for a superhero suit. Adopting the alias Orpheus, he subsequently returned to his hometown, opting to function as an entertainment producer while covertly battling crime.
7. Darwin (Marvel)

Living as a mutant means constantly experiencing rejection. Armando Munoz is well-acquainted with this hardship, given his unique abilities. He stood out among other children due to his baldness, unusually long limbs, and eyes that seemed to transform. To make matters worse, his father left him and his mother at a young age, and his mother has been laying blame on Armando for their circumstances.
On one fateful night when their home was ablaze, Armando bravely rescued his mother, undeterred by the smoke. This heroic act sparked curiosity among scientists, leading them to contemplate experiments on him. The boy was later informed that he was a genetic anomaly and bestowed the name Darwin. However, even after being rescued by him, his mother remained indifferent towards him. Eventually, Darwin was invited to join the X-Men.
6. Black Goliath (Marvel)

William Foster, a biochemist, previously worked in Tony Stark’s Baltimore factory. There, he collaborated with Dr. Hank Pym, a colleague who had grown to 10 feet tall thanks to a serum. Subsequently, Foster transitioned to Stark International’s research division, focusing on eliminating the adverse effects of the Pym Particles. He even dared to experiment on himself and discovered that he could replicate Pym’s abilities without the unwanted side effects.
Following an unsuccessful attempt at reconciling with his former spouse, Foster opted to spend his days battling criminal activities instead. Over time, he sought out opportunities to collaborate with other heroic teams and assisted them during their conflicts.
5. Ironheart (Marvel)
Riri Williams is an exceptionally intelligent child with a knack for technology who initially aimed to design protective gear and weaponry for superheroes. Remarkably, she crafted a trial version of the Iron Man suit, using which she intervened by halting a speeding truck during her own commute home. Impressed by this, Tony Stark paid a visit and ultimately supported her aspiration to join the ranks of superheroes.
After Tony slid into a coma at the close of the Civil War, Riri decided to carry on Ironman’s tradition and adopted the fresh identity of Ironheart.
4. Monica Rambeau (Marvel)

Monica, born during a time when racial discrimination against blacks was rampant, excelled in her career as a Harbor Patrol Lieutenant. Despite being fully capable, she faced barriers in advancing beyond lieutenant. She pledged to assist Professor Andre LeClare in recovering a device that had been stolen from him, which drained energy. In a turn of events, Rambeau opted to destroy the device rather than delivering it to those seeking it. This action unexpectedly granted her supernatural abilities.
1. She gained the power to transform into various types of electromagnetic energy.
2. Her captain bestowed upon her the name Captain Marvel in due time.
3. Over time, she proved to be a reliable ally for the Avengers, eventually ascending to the position of chairwoman within the group.
3. War Machine (Marvel)

One of Tony Stark’s most trusted friends, Jim Rhodes, is someone who has taken on the role of both pilot and confidant for Iron Man. During their friendship, Rhodes filled in as Iron Man when Stark struggled with alcoholism, eventually earning his own Iron Man suit and the alias War Machine. In a critical event, Rhodes was transformed into a cyborg by Stark after losing his limbs due to a terrorist attack. However, he was later restored to a human state when his consciousness was successfully transferred to a clone body.
2. Falcon (Marvel)

Since childhood, Sam harbored a deep fondness for birds, which led him to train pigeons during his younger years. However, as a rebellious teenager, his father was shot and his mother met an untimely death on separate occasions. Despite these devastating losses, Sam persisted in his quest to be a decent person. In his maturity, he encountered Captain America and Redwing, a falcon with whom he formed a strong connection. Later on, Sam assumed the mantle of Falcon after being persuaded by Captain America to join him in his superhero exploits.
Following Steve Rogers’ decision to step down as Captain America, he places his faith in Sam for taking on the mantle. Over time, Sam proves himself worthy and emerges as the leader of the Avengers.

At the ceremony, he covertly contested his uncle’s position as the future Black Panther, acting as the reigning king in the process. Once their identities were revealed, his uncle graciously abdicated the throne, letting his nephew take charge instead.
