As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for the eerie and mysterious, let me share my top ten favorite horror films that delve into the realm of Hoodoo and Voodoo, spiritual practices that originated from Western African lands and found their way deep into the American South, particularly in the remote, haunting swamps inhabited by many African Americans. From Louisiana, Alabama, to Georgia, these movies are set in the Southern states and are characterized by an ominous atmosphere, chilling suspense, and a sense of mystery that lingers long after the credits roll. If you’re ready for a spine-tingling journey into the unknown, here’s my list!
Get Out (2017)
The film “Get Out” offers an innovative and imaginative take on horror that may leave some viewers puzzled, but its thought-provoking narrative sparks intriguing discussions about contemporary issues like racism and discrimination. Simultaneously, it elicits genuine fear in the audience.
On the weekend, I found myself stepping into the home of my girlfriend, Rose, eager to make a good impression on her family. What I wasn’t prepared for was the unusual welcome I received from her parents and their acquaintances. From being excessively gracious to downright bizarre, these individuals presented an atmosphere that was as unsettling as it was welcoming. Little did I know, they were harboring a secret so chilling and sinister – a secret that would soon make me question the safety of my own life.
The Skeleton Key (2005)

One fascinating movie that delves into the themes of voodoo and hoodoo is a horror film set in a Louisiana swamp, where some of the darkest and most perilous secrets are hidden among its inhabitants. The narrative centers around nurse Caroline Ellis, who has recently taken up a new position caring for the elderly Ben Deveroux, who suffered a stroke and is now incapable of walking or speaking.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve found myself drawn deeper into the enigmatic world of Ben, after encountering his unsettling spouse Violet and stumbling upon a hidden chamber filled with arcane spells and bones meant for hoodoo rituals. My resolve to aid Ben only strengthens, convinced that Violet has cast some malevolent charm over him. I’m confident that hoodoo can’t hurt those who don’t embrace its power – however, I’ll soon find myself questioning whether my presence here is to save Ben or if I myself am in peril.
