As a devoted fan who’s been following the Spider-Verse franchise since its inception, I must say, this news about Beyond the Spider-Verse has left me swinging between hope and despair. The anticipation for this film has been building like a radioactive substance under pressure, and to hear it’s being delayed yet again is like finding a pothole in my web of excitement.
In more recent times, the “Spider-Verse” series has become one of the standout animated superhero productions. The initial movie, titled “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“, achieved significant success, and its follow-up, “Across the Spider-Verse“, shattered numerous records.
Since its release following Sony Pictures Animation’s previous global hit “The Angry Birds Movie 2” in 2019, “Across the Spider-Verse” garnered numerous positive reviews and saw impressive box office earnings. It grossed a total of $690.5 million globally, surpassing its predecessor and ranking as the third-highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023. Moreover, it was Sony Pictures Animation’s most financially successful film to date and took home the award for Best Animated Film at the National Board of Review. Additionally, the American Film Institute recognized it as one of the top 10 films of 2023.
Since December 2023, it has been confirmed that the third film in the series, titled “Beyond the Spider-Verse”, is under development. During this time, Chris Miller and Phil Lord shared that the production team was fully engaged in creating the movie.
At this moment, we’re working diligently on finalizing our project… We’re thrilled with the direction the story is taking, I believe it provides a highly rewarding conclusion to this trilogy, and it carries the same emotional depth as its predecessors… To put it simply, we’re deeply engrossed in the process.
Approximately one year on, concerning rumors have arisen. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider’s newsletter, significant parts of the upcoming film have been discarded “because of creative issues.” This decision has led to a restart of development, and the movie is now anticipated to hit theaters in 2027.
Sony apparently abandoned most of the progress made on ‘SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE’ and is currently reworking a significant portion of it.

In December 2021, Lord and Miller declared a third installment in the Spider-Verse series, initially named Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two), scheduled for release in 2023. However, by April 2022, the title was revised to Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Lord and Miller allayed concerns about production delays by emphasizing the significance of taking sufficient time to guarantee quality. Unfortunately, the film was taken off the schedule in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire occupying its release date instead. Following the conclusion of the strike in November 2023, voice recording for the film resumed. This is one of several setbacks the movie has encountered during production.
