Director Reveals the Industry Was ‘Anti-Demi’ Moore Back in the 90s; Says They Were ‘Bigoted’ and Jealous

In the 2025 award season, Demi Moore reigned supreme in the Lead Actress category. However, her path to victory wasn’t smooth sailing. With a career spanning more than four decades and numerous beloved films that were massive box office hits under her belt, the actress from Ghost finally gained the recognition she truly deserved only recently.

Film director Roland Joffé, who worked with Moore on The Scarlet Letter in 1995, recently disclosed some startling truths about influential figures within the film industry who allegedly showed bias against the actress during the early stages of her career.

In an interview with Page Six, Joffé disclosed that a critic from an East Coast publication’s arts department expressed dissatisfaction over his choice to cast Indecent Proposal actress as the scandalous Puritan Hester Prynne. The editor argued that Moore was unsuitable for such a renowned American role and cautioned Joffé, predicting that he would come to regret casting her.

It appears that there was a hidden resistance towards her within the industry due to her daring decisions, which were perceived as unorthodox during that period. For instance, in August 1991, Moore made headlines by gracing the cover of Vanity Fair while showing off her seven-months-pregnant belly in its natural state.

As per Joffé’s perspective, the unnamed “anti-Demi” editor found it hard to accept Moore’s bold decision. They proposed that her daring nude and pregnant portrayal on the cover, coupled with her seductive acting roles on-screen, allegedly undermined her credibility as a serious actress.

Nevertheless, Moore took the criticism in stride. She continued to captivate audiences with her performances, such as the striptease scene in The Scarlet Letter. To top it off, she was paid an impressive $12.5 million for her role as a former FBI secretary in a film, making her the highest-paid actress at that time.

At that point, people felt a bitter blend of resentment due to Demi’s self-assuredness about her appearance, as well as a sense of covetousness because she was earning more than any other female actor, according to Joffé.

This year, Moore garnered significant recognition for her movie titled “The Substance.” Following triumphs at the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, she is now poised to attend the 97th Academy Awards as a Lead Actress nominee.
