Director Explains Why ‘Wicked’ Changed the Title of the Second Movie: “Who wants a movie called Wicked: Part Two?”

In his discussion about the title change for the movie “Wicked: For Good,” directed by Jon M. Chu, he mentioned that a film named “Wicked: Part Two” didn’t seem appealing to many. The script had always included “For Good,” and they felt it was more fitting to emphasize the journey that lay ahead, as reported by Variety.

The title ties into one of the musical’s most impactful tunes, during which characters Elphaba, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, ponder over how their relationship has shaped them.

In December, the film “Wicked: For Good” garnered a mix of responses online, yet it has gone on to achieve tremendous success, shattering box office records and making history.

In my view, when Chu discussed the selection process, it seemed clear that ‘For Good’ was the title chosen because it encapsulated the climax and future direction of the characters as depicted in the film.

Is there a desire for the sequel titled ‘Wicked: Part Two’? There was some debate during scriptwriting, as the original title always implied ‘For Good.’ However, it seemed that the team didn’t favor the idea of labeling this as ‘Part Two.’ To clarify, ‘For Good’ represents our destination for this film series, a sign that we aim to complete and finalize this story.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit I’ve been eagerly yearning to attend one of those enchanting sing-alongs myself, ever since Cynthia Erivo hinted at glimpses of them. We, the actors, shared stories about our creative bond, expressing our mutual trust and support, both on and off-screen.

The movie is set for release on November 21.
