Besides being renowned for his memorable film characters like Iceman from Top Gun and Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever, Val Kilmer is also recognized as a talented poet outside of his acting profession.
For a significant portion of his existence, he composed verse, commencing during his college years at The Juilliard School in his twenties. This love for penning persisted for many years, culminating in some pieces being published in 2021, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
As a connoisseur of the art of living, I find myself deeply moved by the words of Val Kilmer, who recently left us at 65 after battling pneumonia. In his own unique way, he beautifully captured the essence of poetry when he said, “Poetry is a highly personal and sensitive form of expression. It’s like your pulse, your rhythm, the melody of your soul.
1987 saw Jim Kilmer releasing his own publication titled “My Edens After Burns,” a compilation of poems penned during his initial years in Hollywood. This book was only produced in a small quantity, initially presented as festive gifts to close friends and relatives during the holiday season.
Initially, some copies found buyers, yet Kilmer ended up acquiring the majority of the remaining editions and stored them in his garage. Gradually, he distributed these copies at various gatherings, such as the Colorado Shakespeare Festival over time.
Kilmer’s poetry was deeply personal and centered around themes such as love, mortality, spirituality, and his Hollywood experiences. One of the poems in the collection, “The Pfeiffer Howls at The Moon,” was dedicated to his former girlfriend, Michelle Pfeiffer. Due to its limited availability, My Edens After Burns has become a sought-after collector’s item. A first edition can be found listed for USD 3,500 on Amazon.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but observe that Kilmer’s writing seemed to be deeply rooted in his personal connections and life journeys. His romantic entanglements with the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer, Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie, and Cher were not only high-profile but also appear to have left indelible marks on his poetic expressions. For eight years, I understand he was married to Joanne Whalley, a union that produced two beautiful children. It’s fascinating to ponder how these relationships might have fueled the fire of his poetic musings.
His life encompassed a blend of creative triumphs and personal hardships, as portrayed in the 2021 documentary ‘Val’. This film shed light on his fight against throat cancer and how the demise of his younger brother Wesley during childhood left an indelible mark on him.
