Did You Know that Henry Cavill Gave His Support to the Controversial Black Superman Project?

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of DC Comics, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism when it comes to the DCU under James Gunn’s leadership. The potential is undeniably there, with characters like Superman and the Presidential Superman, Calvin Ellis, waiting in the wings.

Warner Bros., the corporation that holds the rights for DC Comics characters, aspired to create their own interconnected universe following the success of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This ambition led to the formation of what we now know as the DCEU (DC Extended Universe). However, despite its promising start, strong cast, and some outstanding movies, the DCEU was unfortunately set up for failure from the beginning due to a series of poor decisions and misguided choices.

During the interim, James Gunn took over and spearheaded the transformation of what we now know as the DCU, leading to a variety of alterations such as numerous cast changes, fresh initiatives that were unveiled, and the abandonment or modification of some previous projects.

Among the DCEU’s debated productions during its time was J.J. Abrams’ planned Superman movie, which aimed to feature Calvin Ellis as Superman on the big screen. This character made his first appearance in “Final Crisis” issue #7. Michael B. Jordan had been cast for this role, although the future of the project remains uncertain. However, it once gained support from an unexpected and intriguing figure!

Previously this year, we shared news that James Gunn had confirmed the ongoing development of Abram’s Elseworlds project featuring Calvin Ellis. Although specifics are yet to be revealed, it appears that Gunn is progressing with the project, and if all goes well, we could soon witness Calvin Ellis on screen! This would be quite exciting, as Ellis holds the position of President in his world, meaning Superman as President might become a reality – an incredible sight indeed.

But, regardless of that, we managed to dig up an old interview that shows the project received support from a very interesting source, which is definitely something that is worth noting in light of everything that happened since that 2021 interview. Here is the quote:

It’s thrilling to think beyond just the physical representation of Superman. Superman symbolizes an ideal, a powerful concept that resides within each one of us. Why can’t there be several individuals embodying this heroic spirit? Just as Joaquin Phoenix delivered a remarkable portrayal in his Joker movie, it’s intriguing to consider separate interpretations of the character that don’t necessarily connect with the main franchise. In fact, similar to how multiple Superman comic book stories unfold simultaneously, why can’t we have different films exploring diverse aspects of this iconic figure?

The one who spoke up was none other than Henry Cavill, the actor known for portraying Superman in the DCEU. He expressed his backing for Abrams’ project, expressing faith that it could be as successful as Phillips’ Joker movie, which fell under the Elseworlds banner just like it did.

So far, these films have proven to be successful. If J.J. Abrams’ project continues, we anticipate that it will align with the preceding Elseworlds series, leading hopefully to another outstanding movie in the future.
