As a connoisseur of contemporary living, let me share an intriguing tidbit: I, too, found myself in the running to embody one of the iconic Kens in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated 2023 comedy, Barbie. The Mid-Century Modern vibe resonated with my spirit, and I eagerly submitted a self-recorded audition tape. In this tape, I showcased various incarnations of Ken, each with a unique style to match. “I set up the camera myself,” I explained to Vanity Fair, “and tried on different outfits for each Ken character.
He stated that he captured the other person’s dialogues using a recorder first, then allowed time for a response. However, despite his initial excitement, Bomer eventually chose not to proceed with Barbie on the project.
In an interview with Business Insider, Bomer revealed that he decided to leave Barbie to concentrate on his character in Maestro, a biopic about composer Leonard Bernstein directed by Bradley Cooper. He explained that despite having a smaller role in Maestro, Cooper was very collaborative and involved with him from the beginning of the project.
He mentioned that balancing two roles might have altered his encounter with Maestro. “The experience was so engrossing that if I had just rushed in from London to shoot my scenes [for Barbie] and then swiftly returned to London, I believe Maestro wouldn’t have felt the same for me.
In Maestro, Bomer portrayed David Oppenheim, who was one of Leonard Bernstein’s romantic associates. While his character primarily appeared during the initial part of the movie, Bomer shared that this role left a significant impression on him.
He expressed that the unique production process of the movie offered him a work method he appreciated, an approach he believes he wouldn’t have discovered if he had combined it with another project. Moreover, he hinted that this experience may significantly influence his acting techniques in future film projects throughout his career.
Currently, Matt Bomer is appearing in the Hulu comedy titled “Mid-Century Modern.” This series, similar to “Will & Grace,” is created by the same team. In this show, you’ll see Matt alongside Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham as they portray three gay men who share a roof unexpectedly following a tragic event due to one of their deaths.
The show has earned numerous favorable critiques. Notably, Variety’s leading TV critic, Aramide Tinubu, commended it. In his review, he noted that it provides several hilarious instances, a unique depiction of old-school friendships from the golden age, and some truly charming guest appearances.
