In a thrilling turn of events during Shakira’s latest stint on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, she unveiled an intriguing tale about the origins of one of my all-time favorite jams – Hips Don’t Lie, her iconic collaboration with Wyclef Jean. Fallon inquired whether this smash hit, which dominated charts and ruled our hearts, was destined to grace the tracks of Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 since day one.
Shakira clarified that she recalled her album had been distributed priorly, and it was only afterward that an idea emerged. She then collaborated with Wyclef on a track, which eventually became one of her most recognized songs in her career – a composition that came out post the album’s release to stores.
Shakira expressed that the partnership seemed destined, as she had dreamt about Wyclef Jean the evening before her manager phoned to reveal that the rapper desired to team up with her. “Once I began working with Wyclef,” she stated, “I knew I was on my way to a hit.” This intuition prompted her to reach out to her record label directly and demand a substantial modification.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share this thrilling tidbit: I found myself picking up the phone, dialing Donny Lennard at Epic Records, and passionately pleading with him to withdraw our beloved Shakira’s album from stores, so she could add her fresh new track to it.
At first, he was hesitant when she shared that they had a strong contender for a hit song, claiming the albums were already released. However, Shakira persistently urged him to have faith in her, asserting it would be worth the investment. Eventually, Lenner relented and agreed to give her proposal a chance. The record label subsequently updated the album to incorporate Hips Don’t Lie.
The decision proved fruitful as Hips Don’t Lie climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Shakira’s most successful singles ever. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this hit song, adding more relevance to Shakira’s story.
