As a dedicated follower of Charli XCX’s illustrious career, I can’t help but marvel at her meteoric rise from Myspace sensation to Saturday Night Live host and musical guest. Her journey is a testament to perseverance, talent, and an uncanny ability to collaborate with the biggest names in music.
This week, Charli XCX graced Saturday Night Live for the third time, serving both as host and musical performer. With her summer hit album “Brat” creating quite a buzz, the pop sensation was officially slated to appear in November on SNL. In one of the show’s promotional clips, she playfully bantered with cast member Marcello Hernández about whether his attire matched the term “brat,” which Charli XCX made famous following the release of her sixth album by the same name.
For nearly a decade, Charli XCX has shone brightly in the spotlight, but it’s only now that she’s truly grabbed the main role, not just in her performances, but also on the award circuit and during promotional events. Surprisingly to many fans, before Charli released her first album, she had already collaborated with well-known artists such as Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, among others.
2008 marked the start of her music journey as she began posting her songs on Myspace, eventually landing gigs at underground rave parties in warehouses. By 2010, she had secured a record deal with Asylum Records and subsequently released her first album, “True Romance,” in 2013.
Charli’s significant success began in 2012 with Icona Pop’s smash hit “I Love It,” which was followed by the Grammy-nominated collaboration with Iggy Azalea titled “Fancy” in 2014. Some of her solo hits include “Boom Clap” and “Break the Rules.” She has also teamed up with prominent artists such as Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes, Camila Cabello, Blondie, and Billie Eilish on tracks like “Same Old Love,” “Señorita,” “Tonight,” and “Guess,” respectively.
Over the weekend, during her opening act on SNL, Charli clarified the term “brat” using Martha Stewart’s recent conflict with a journalist as an illustration. The incident started when Stewart inadvertently stated that a journalist covering her legal case had passed away, which led to the journalist retorting, “I’m alive, you b****.” Charli characterized this exchange as the epitome of “brat” behavior, reflecting her unique and audacious approach to comedy.
Charli XCX’s “Brat Summer” has found its place in popular culture, largely due to the success of her recent album. In a TikTok post, she clarified that “brat” stands for being truthful, untidy, and welcoming disorder – qualities that align perfectly with her personal style.
Previously on SNL, Bowen Yang did an amusing imitation of Charli’s “rebellious” character in a skit titled The Talk Talk Show With Charli XCX. Charli herself complimented Yang’s performance, finding it “cool” and appreciating the wig used to mimic her likeness.
charlie is set to host the show for the first time, but she’s no stranger to Saturday Night Live; she previously performed as a musical guest back in 2014 and more recently in 2022.
