Netflix’s series Adolescence has left viewers captivated, thanks to its distinctive single-take cinematography and exceptional performances by its cast members. Particularly noteworthy is the 15-year-old newcomer, Owen Cooper, whose acting skills have truly impressed audiences.
In this series, the rising sensation portrays Jamie, a pre-teen boy who’s been found guilty of murdering a fellow student. Each installment of the four-episode drama unfolds in real-time, showing characters as they navigate the fallout from the tragic homicide event.
In the third installment of the series, the episode stood out as it showcased a captivating exchange between Jaime (Owen) and psychologist Briony Ariston, portrayed by Erin Doherty. Remarkably, the entire 44-minute-long scene where they engaged in what felt like a chess match was filmed in a single take.
It turned out that the TV debut for the inexperienced actor was his very first scene, and not only did he perform flawlessly during this initial role, but he even added an improvisation that ended up being included in the final version of the show.
In an interview with Tudum, director Phil Barantini disclosed that Jamie’s spontaneous yawn during Ariston’s speech was not part of the script and was due to Owen’s exhaustion from a long day on set. “I didn’t instruct him to do so. It was the final take. We were all watching behind the monitors, exclaiming, ‘Oh my goodness!'” the director further explained.
The series titled “Adolescence,” which debuted on a popular streaming platform on March 13, swiftly rose to become one of the most-watched shows. Drawing inspiration from actual instances of violence against young women, this gripping drama focuses on themes such as misogyny, incel mentality, and the influence of the internet on today’s youth.
Additionally, it delves into how the tragic incident affects Jaime’s loved ones, dragging them into turmoil. Stephen Graham portrays Eddie, Jaime’s father, who embarks on a quest to uncover the facts surrounding the situation after their child’s detention.
In this case, who should we attribute the responsibility? It’s about the intricacies of modern masculinity and misogyny, which can lead a boy to such a heinous act. As explained by Graham in an interview with Netflix, they aimed to delve into the thought processes of young men in today’s society.
He mentioned, “They face similar pressures from friends, online platforms, and social networks, just like children everywhere. These pressures are very real to them.
Adolescence is now available to stream on Netflix.
