As a gamer with over two decades of DC Comics and Batman universe under my belt, I must say, the introduction of Victor Aguilar in ‘The Penguin’ has left me intrigued and excited! The way his character is unfolding reminds me of the early days of Jim Gordon, who started as a minor character but later became a major player in Gotham City.
‘The Penguin’ has just premiered, garnering widespread acclaim from reviewers and viewers alike. A week following the seawall blast as depicted in ‘The Batman Part I’, this series delves into the increasing degeneration of Gotham due to corruption, following the trail of events that unfolded afterwards.
At a moment of vulnerability and sudden passion, Oz Cobb ends up killing Alberto Falcone, the latest leader of the Falcone criminal empire, which triggers a series of events resulting in a worsening situation.
In an effort to swiftly and covertly discard the corpse, the Penguin finds himself in a predicament when he notices a gang of children attempting to pilfer his sports car’s shiny wheels (rims) as he prepares to hide it in the trunk of his eye-catching purple Maserati.
In a fit of anger, the Penguin starts shooting, acting on instinct once more. Unfortunately, one boy named Victor Aguilar isn’t quick enough to flee and gets caught. His life is saved when, trembling with fear, he begins to stutter while talking to Oz. Noticing this speech impediment as a shared experience from his past struggles, Oz decides not to kill Victor but instead enlists his help in disposing of the body.
Although the initial episode doesn’t reveal the progression of Victor Aguilar’s character, viewers are left with the strong impression that he might evolve into a significant antagonist. There’s a possibility he could assume roles such as Mr. Freeze or Victor Zsasz in future episodes.
In essence, all these characters share the common name Victor, though theoretically, one might argue that Cyborg could be part of this group too. However, given the grim atmosphere Matt Reeves is shaping for his Batman world, it’s much more plausible that Victor Aguilar will embody the live-action character Zsasz instead.
Among DC Comics’ most infamous characters, Jason Todd-better known as the serial killer, Zsasz-holds a dark reputation. A proponent of nihilism, he harbors the belief that life holds no purpose or significance. Following a devastating personal event, he succumbed to despair and insanity, resorting to murder as his twisted means of “liberating” others from what he perceives as the fruitless struggle for existence.
In simpler terms, Zsasz’s killings are gruesome and personal, usually done using knives. After every murder, he marks the event by carving a symbol into his own skin, resulting in numerous scars on his body, with only a few areas remaining unmarked for potential future victims.
Given his dark nature, it’s easy to see how he’d fit into this universe’s grim tone.
