As a seasoned observer and admirer of the evolving world of entertainment, I find myself deeply moved by Jenna Ortega‘s journey. At just 21 years old, she has already navigated the tumultuous waters of stardom with an unparalleled grace and resilience that is truly inspiring.
Jenna Ortega recently talked about her contentious remarks from March 2023 concerning altering her character’s lines on Netflix’s Wednesday. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, she acknowledged, “Perhaps I could have expressed myself more effectively in explaining it all. I believe, quite often, I get carried away in my thoughts. I think it was challenging because I felt if I had articulated the situation more clearly, it likely would’ve been better received.”
In a March 2023 episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Ortega shared that several of the original Wednesday scripts were confusing to her. Without consulting the writers, she adjusted some dialogue, stating, “I don’t think I’ve ever had to assert myself as much on a set as I did on Wednesday.”
In a recent statement, the actress who played The Scream character commented, “The actions and emotions Wednesday portrayed throughout the storyline were inconsistent with her character. Her involvement in a love triangle seemed illogical and unrealistic.”
At that moment, Jenna clarified that within the script, there was a part concerning a dance dress for school, in which the character showed enthusiasm before feeling disdain. She believed this dialogue didn’t align with her character’s persona, so she revised it accordingly.
Occasionally, she would adjust dialogue lines without first discussing it with the authors, which sometimes left the script supervisor in a state of bewilderment. Frequently, she found herself needing to clarify to the authors why specific scenes, as originally scripted, couldn’t be acted out by her.
Film and TV authors found her comments distressing, leading them to stage a strike about two months later. On social media, many labeled Ortega as “toxic” and “entitled.” Some members of the Writers Guild of America even held signs reading, “Jenna Ortega will have nothing to retort without writers!” in protests.
21-year-old Ortega shared with Vanity Fair that she finally grasped the idea that one cannot please everyone, a concept that was initially challenging for her as she naturally tends to please people. She eventually learned to accept that not everyone might like her, and that’s completely okay. Last year, Ortega confessed to feeling exhausted with herself, commenting, “My face was everywhere… So it’s understandable if I were tired of seeing the same girl with some trite quote or something, I would be fed up too.”
Currently, Ortega serves as a producer for the upcoming second season of Wednesday. In this role, she offers guidance and feedback. Tim Burton, an executive producer, highly appreciates her work, describing her as “straightforward, no-nonsense, and artistic.” He even hinted that if Ortega were interested, she could potentially direct the series herself.
Season 2 of Wednesday is expected on Netflix in 2025.
