As a seasoned lifestyle expert who has been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe for decades, I must say I’m intrigued by this latest development. The return of Robert Downey Jr. as a villain is a bold move that could potentially revitalize the franchise.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share some intriguing news about the Avengers universe! It appears that Marvel Studios is planning to introduce Dr. Doom as the next antagonist in their upcoming movies. While there’s been speculation about whether Robert Downey Jr. might be taking on a new role following his departure from the franchise, it seems that the shift was actually orchestrated months ago with Jonathan Majors’ character, Kang the Conqueror, stepping out of the limelight. Fans are left pondering what this change means for the upcoming films and the future of the Avengers saga!
On July 27th, it was announced during the MCU panel at San Diego Comic-Con that the award-winning actor will reprise his role as a villain in Marvel’s upcoming films, while Joe and Anthony Russo will resume their director roles for Avengers: Endgame (Doomsday) and Avengers: The War of Secrets (Secret Wars).
It’s been suggested that, based on online theories, Marvel initially intended for Kang the Conqueror to depart during season 2 of Loki. Following Thanos’ defeat in Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) introduced Major as an adversary, complete with his villainous characteristics. However, these were later swapped for those of the Mad Titans amidst the chaos of the Multiverse.
As a devoted fan following the adventures of Loki, I’ve witnessed Kang and its variants grace the screens in both season 1 and 2, brilliantly brought to life by the talented Michael B. Jordan (Majors). Unfortunately, due to a legal dispute, the studio decided to part ways with him, resulting in the departure of the Creed actor from our beloved series.
Based on reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios initially intended to phase out the character Kang following his last appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This decision to introduce fresh characters into the franchise was made due to the underperformance of the Paul Rudd film at the box office. As a result, the concept for Loki season 2 emerged, allowing for the elimination of Kang’s character and making way for new roles in upcoming films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise.

In a recent update, Jonathan Majors shares his sadness over his character being replaced by Dr. Doom in upcoming MCU movies. During an interview with TMZ, he expressed his feelings after Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr.’s return as the antagonist at Comic-Con. Majors confided in the news outlet, “Well, I’m heartbroken, of course. But Kang is a character I love, and Dr. Doom is formidable indeed.”
He also mentioned, “It seems just to me that Mr. Downey has been welcomed with understanding, interest, and affection, and given the freedom to express himself artistically and creatively at such a high level. Honestly, I wasn’t afforded the same opportunity.”
As a die-hard Marvel enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that two upcoming movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, are slated for release in May 2026 and May 2027 respectively. In these films, Robert Downey Jr. will take on a new role, stepping into the villainous side of his character.
