In simpler terms, a court has dismissed a copyright claim made against Lil Nas X by model and artist Rodney Woodland. The claim was that Lil Nas X copied poses in his Instagram posts, but the federal court found no evidence to support this allegation.
In a nutshell, Woodland claimed that the artist copied photograph concepts and poses from his Instagram photoshoots without due credit. Eventually, after about two years of legal battles, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit sided with Nas, putting an end to this dispute.
The central issue concerned a series of promotional images Nas posted in October 2021 prior to his Montero album launch. Woodland argued that several semi-nude promotional shots, including the cover art for Industry Baby single, mimicked poses and concepts he had previously shared from August 2018 to July 2021. However, the court found these claims to lack legal merit.
According to court records, the contested images on Woodland’s profile garnered only a modest amount of engagement, roughly between eight likes and 75. On the other hand, Lil Nas X’s photos attracted a significant audience, varying from hundreds of thousands to millions. The court determined that there was no sufficient evidence to prove that the rapper J Christ ever saw Woodland’s work.
The judges determined that the poses and ideas Woodland employed weren’t unique enough to be protected by copyright law because similar artistic motifs are not subject to copyright. The court explained that although both artists utilized identical themes, these themes are common in art and photography and do not qualify for copyright protection under the law.
In simple terms, Rodney Woodland’s lawsuit against Lil Nas X, which was originally multiple claims filed in June 2022 and later simplified to a single copyright claim, has been dismissed. This means the case is now officially closed, marking the conclusion of Woodland’s legal dispute with the popular music artist without any further opportunities for amendment.
