Did Latto Diss Ice Spice in New Album Sugar Honey Iced Tea? Rapper Clarifies

As a lifestyle expert with over two decades of experience in the music industry, I must say that the ongoing saga between Latto and Ice Spice is a fascinating spectacle to observe. It seems like we are witnessing a modern-day version of hip-hop’s legendary rivalries, albeit with a touch of friendly competition.

In the week following the release of her third album, “Sugar Honey Iced Tea,” on August 9, rapper Latto has ignited discussions about the content of her songs, specifically her ongoing feud with Ice Spice. Known originally as Alyssa Michelle Stephens, Latto previously released her albums “777” in 2022.

A young hip-hop artist frequently references Ice Spice in multiple songs, weaving witty lines that suggest their past public disagreements. In the final track titled “S/O to Me,” Latto, aged 24, seems to criticize Ice Spice through her lyrics: “Ice is just water when it thaws / I’ve got plenty of towels on hand, it’s simple.”

To ensure there was no misunderstanding, Latto openly criticized Ice Spice by using her birth name Isis Naija Gaston in her lyrics, saying “Goodbye sister, interestingly enough, you can’t meet my gaze, sister.” This lyrical jab added fuel to the rumored Latto vs. Ice Spice dispute, leaving fans buzzing over her bold words online.

As I eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of my latest album, I recently had the pleasure of sitting down for an enlightening conversation with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden. During our chat, he brought up some observations regarding the lyrical nods towards Ice Spice, hinting at a potential rivalry. However, I took the opportunity to clarify any rumors about this matter in a relaxed and candid manner.

The singer from Big Energy explained during an August 8 interview, as reported by Billboard, that what may appear to others as simple beef is actually art to him. He believes that art is subjective and open to various interpretations, which he finds beautiful. However, in real-life situations, it won’t be like that; there won’t be any actual conflict or disagreement.

Following the high-profile rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar earlier this year, Latto expressed her discomfort with artist rivalries. “I’m truly exhausted,” she stated. “In all honesty, I’m done with the beef. I want to make it clear, Latto doesn’t have any issues with anyone.” The BET award winner spoke out about the matter.

Latto didn’t stop taking shots at the Barbie World rapper; in a third verse of “S/O to Me,” she also criticized Ice Spice for her collaboration with Taylor Swift on the song “Karma” from 2022. She sings, “Karma will handle you, I swear, your judgment is coming.”

It’s noteworthy that both rappers, Ice Spice and Latto, concur on the alleged feud, maintaining there is no genuine tension or conflict between them. In an interview with Rolling Stone for their July 2024 issue, Ice Spice acknowledged Latto’s jabs, labeling it as friendly competition without any serious underlying issues.

In contrast, a contestant from The Rap Game expressed doubts about Ice Spice participating in a rap battle. Speaking with Billboard, Latto stated that if she were to engage in such a competition, it would be with someone she believes could match her blow for blow. She wasn’t certain if Ice Spice would be interested in such an encounter.

In a nod to various artists, Sugar Honey Iced Tea’s diss tracks aren’t only aimed at Ice Spice – Nicki Minaj is one example mentioned. On the other hand, Latto’s latest project boasts high-profile collaborations with the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Flo Milli, and Touchwood. This 21-track compilation includes tracks such as Brokey, Sunday Service, There She Go, and more.
