Did Denzel Washington Have ‘Too Good A Time’ Filming Gladiator II? Here’s What The Actor Has To Say

As a fervent admirer of the silver screen, I can confidently say that Denzel Washington‘s portrayal of Macrinus in Gladiator II is nothing short of extraordinary. His transformation into this conniving and enigmatic character seems to have been more than just an acting gig for him – it was a labor of love, a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft.

In the eagerly awaited sequel to Gladiator, titled Gladiator II, Denzel Washington portrays the cunning, merciless, and mysterious arms dealer and gladiator manager Macrinus – a role he appeared to thoroughly enjoy. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor was questioned about his experience playing Macrinus. “Everyone seems to think I had a great time with this character,” he replied. “They all say that.

“I’m having too good a time. Is that what you’re telling me?’” Washington added with a chuckle.

Regardless of the storyline, he’s delighted to have joined the Gladiator series, and accepting the role was an instant decision for him. In an interview with Empire magazine, he openly shared this.

He mentioned that there aren’t many more movies he wants to make, but when asked about his enthusiasm for the project, he swiftly pointed out director Ridley Scott,” the Training Day actor explained. “He’s simply one of the greatest. He’s a master, and they crafted an exceptional screenplay,” he added.

When presented with the opportunity, he understood it was the task he had yearned for all along, “and that’s as straightforward as can be.” The continuation of the 2000s film Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, will focus on a new generation amidst the same setting. The story unfolds around an adult Lucius (played by Paul Mescal), who is exiled to a desolate region for his safety against the Roman empire following the events of the initial film.

In the synopsis of the sequel, it is stated that following the conquest of his home by the new, oppressive rulers of Rome, Lucius finds himself compelled to enter the Colosseum. To survive and restore Rome’s former glory, he must draw upon memories of his past for strength. When developing his character, the author put great emphasis on research and exploration.

Due to having to wear a dress as part of his character, Washington found himself needing to lift his hem when crossing obstacles and walking in sandals. He humorously commented, “I now understand the challenges of wearing a dress!” In the initial stages, he stumbled a bit, but soon adapted and felt at par with others.

Gladiator II will hit the theaters on November 15.
