Dick Van Dyke, 99, Reveals His Fitness Secret: ‘I’ve Always Exercised Three Days a Week’

At 99 years old, Dick Van Dyke maintains a strict workout routine, going to the gym three times weekly with no exceptions.

In a recent installment of Ted Danson’s podcast titled “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” the near-centenarian film icon shared insights on how he manages to keep himself in great shape, a feat rarely achieved by many people.

He mentioned, ‘What is it that contributes to your age and health status?’ To which he replied, ‘I’ve always made sure to work out three times a week.’ He added, ‘Nowadays, we still go to the gym, and I believe that’s why I don’t suffer from the same physical limitations as my peers.’

As a dedicated admirer, I recall being utterly captivated by Dick Van Dyke’s remarkable fitness regimen when we used to train at the gym in Malibu. If I had the chance to hit the gym early, I’d often witness him working out on various weight machines, followed by an energetic circuit training routine that was nothing short of inspiring. Instead of walking to the next machine, he would dance his way there, a sight that never failed to leave me in awe. “You literally danced to the next machine,” I remember telling him.

77-year-old actor from Cheers shared that he observed Van Dyke’s workout regimen for around two weeks before inquiring about it. He remembered Van Dyke mentioning that after finishing his gym workouts, he would return home to swim laps, followed by a restful nap.

“Good routine,” Van Dyke exclaimed.

The star added that he’s more into yoga, sit-ups, and stretching these days.

When discussing his book “Keep Moving” and other insights about aging, Van Dyke expressed that the toughest aspect of growing older is letting go of activities one loves.

As a die-hard tennis enthusiast, I’ve reached my limit on the court. Yet, I can still dash about, groove to tunes, and belt out melodies with gusto. According to Van Dyke, some individuals talked about tennis and golf, while a woman lamented not being able to have lunch with her friends. Others expressed regret over not making wiser business choices. Regarding this last group, Van Dyke remarked, “They’ve overlooked the essence.

According to Van Dyke, the key is to savor life through meaningful activities. Recognizing that many individuals are going through tough times nowadays, he suggested finding a passionate hobby or activity that truly captivates you as a way to live more joyfully.
