Although Dexter: Original Sin, which had received positive ratings and an early renewal for season 2, seems unlikely to continue anymore. This information was shared in a report from Variety. No explicit reason has been provided by Showtime yet, but it could be due to the Skydance/Paramount merger that may have affected their programming. Meanwhile, the ongoing Dexter: Resurrection, featuring original star Michael C. Hall, is garnering great appreciation from both fans and critics. With this success, it seems certain that a second season of that show will follow. Possibly, Showtime decided to avoid having two Dexter Morgans on screen as it could weaken the brand’s appeal.
In a departure from the usual chronology, Dexter: Original Sin, featuring Patrick Gibson as a younger version of America’s beloved serial killer, made its debut on Showtime in December 2024, set back in 1991. The series concluded its run in February of this year. Joining Gibson were an impressive ensemble cast that included Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey. It’s possible that any of these actors could reappear in future seasons of Dexter: Resurrection, should the decision makers see fit to include them via flashback.
It’s plausible that Showtime created “Original Sin” while there was some uncertainty about Michael C. Hall’s continued involvement with the Dexter franchise, given that Dexter Morgan appeared to have perished at the end of the revival series “Dexter: New Blood”. However, with Hall returning as the Bay Harbor Butcher and the show receiving positive reception from fans, it appears Showtime has come to understand what Disney is discovering now with their Marvel and Star Wars properties – sometimes, more isn’t always better. It seems that despite the conclusion of “Original Sin”, the Dexter franchise will continue to live on.
