Despite the Praise, Denzel Washington Is Once Again Snubbed by BAFTA, Among Other Surprising Absentees

Although Denzel Washington boasts an illustrious career and multiple awards, he remains unacknowledged by BAFTA with no nominations yet. In the upcoming film Gladiator II, Washington continues to shine, having been nominated for 10 Oscars and winning twice. However, in a surprising turn of events, BAFTA has overlooked him once more as he aims for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

2025’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations were announced today, but several significant movies failed to secure a nod. Notably, films like “Queer”, “Challengers”, “Babygirl”, and “Paddington in Peru” were overlooked. Additionally, the musical “Wicked” was conspicuously absent from both the Best Film and Best Director categories.

Both “Queer” and “Challengers,” directed by Luca Guadagnino, were contenders following their Golden Globe nominations. The main actors, Daniel Craig and Zendaya, also received recognition from the Golden Globes; however, neither movie advanced beyond the BAFTA longlist.

In a somewhat disappointing turn of events, Nicole Kidman, who had previously won Best Actress at Venice and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in “Babygirl”, did not manage to win over BAFTA voters. Regrettably, the intense drama of “Babygirl” failed to secure a nomination.

In the United Kingdom, the third film of the cherished Paddington series, titled “Paddington in Peru,” enjoyed a massive debut, amassing a revenue of $43 million. Nevertheless, the critical reception wasn’t quite as warm as it was for the initial two movies.

Despite BAFTA launching a new children’s and family category, the movie failed to receive a nomination in this round. This comes as a shock, considering that the past Paddington films were frequently nominated for BAFTAs.

It’s intriguing to note that despite Denzel Washington being a strong Oscar contender, his BAFTA recognition has been absent thus far. His acting talents are applauded worldwide, but it appears that BAFTA often fails to acknowledge his work.
