As a long-time admirer of Hollywood and the British Royal Family, I found the interaction between Denzel Washington and King Charles III at the London premiere of Gladiator II quite intriguing. It was evident that Denzel, with his illustrious career spanning over four decades, has had countless encounters with celebrities and dignitaries alike. Yet, it seemed as though he momentarily forgot the royal protocol, leading to an awkward exchange.
At the London debut of his movie Gladiator II on November 13th, Denzel Washington had an uncomfortable exchange with King Charles III. Accompanied by his fellow actors Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and director Ridley Scott, Washington walked the red carpet that day.
In accordance with the royal etiquette, we all stood in a line, waiting for King Charles to engage with us individually. I was first, and he extended his hand for a warm greeting. Next up was the film’s director, who was greeted similarly. Then it was my turn, standing before him, I said, “Nice to meet you,” as our hands met in a shake. The King then showed interest in the character I portrayed in the film.
Upon King Charles’ arrival in Washington, the actor seemed uncomfortable with the idea of shaking his hand. When King Charles extended his hand, Washington accepted it but expressed uncertainty, saying “I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to shake your hand.” The king then questioned Washington about his role as Emperor Macrinus, to which Washington responded by stating that his character was a despicable individual.
In my own words, let me clarify: I may come off as a bit bashful at times, but don’t be fooled, I’m genuinely charming. You’ll see that soon enough. I consider myself quite the gentleman, if I do say so myself, and Washington was indeed the epitome of that. King Charles commended his remarkable film career, to which Washington humbly acknowledged with a heartfelt thank you. Throughout their exchange, the King maintained an amiable demeanor, smiling warmly at every interaction.
The upcoming movie, titled Gladiator II, serves as a sequel to the 2000 hit film featuring Russell Crowe. This long-awaited production centers around Lucius, portrayed by Paul Mescal, who is oblivious to his hidden royal lineage. He leads a reclusive existence, kept away from the scrutiny of the Roman Empire at the behest of his mother, played by Connie Nielsen.
When General Marcus Acacius initiates a hunt, it’s Lucius who gets captured and thrust into the notorious fighting pits as a gladiator. Will he alter Rome’s destiny or suffer the same end as Maximus (Crowe)? As per the movie’s synopsis: “Having lost his home to the oppressive emperors now ruling Rome, Lucius must find courage in his past to restore the former grandeur of Rome for its people.
Gladiator II will hit theaters on November 15.
